There's a story in the Sunday Times today saying that the Tories are cosying up to Jeremy Browne to say he should defect to them after he was sacked by Nick Clegg in the recent reshuffle.

Didn't that start from a tweet by Louise Mensch?

Isn't he a bit right wing for them?

It would be passingly amusing if he defected and then got a ministerial post off Cameron.

Just your typical Sunday papers puff piece and as erland says, the source is discredited

Couldn't happen before January 2015 anyway. Poaching an MP from your coalition partner is just too uncollegiate a move to countenance until you're primed for a dissolution. Even then, it'd make a new coalition pact harder to accomplish, because it'd stoke the fears of the left of the Lib Dems about the risks of eventual merger.

I've never been a member of the BNP... I'm a fee-paying member of the Green Party. Edit: That is to say, you can't defect from Green to Green. Why are you listed as a British Nationalist here.

"British Nationalist" doesn't just mean BNP in this context - IIRC he has said that is a correct description of his views.

The above is correct. I had assumed that British Nationalist along with Socialist were tendencies because it would be tiresome for the moderator to keep track of the ludicrous number of splitter-groups and micro-parties on the far-right and far-left, respectively...

I think it is but Green is separately listed.

I think it is but Green is separately listed. If I'm still a member by next February (that is, if I renew my membership), I'll ask for it to be changed. I'm fine with 'British Nationalist' for now, however...

You can hopefully forgive my confusion Cromwell. You could always ask Kristofer to put your true party allegiance on display underneath your username. I have to say that any faint sympathy I might have for the Green Party is undermined by the news that Cromwell is a member!

A senior Tory backbencher on KCC has learnt the hard way that UKIP is a party of principle... He tried to negotiate his defection promising that if he was made deputy leader of our group he could bring two others over with him... effectively depriving the Tories of overall control.
We told him that if people wanted to defect they are welcome to do so but we only want defectors who genuinely support our party and not who want a nice little package...
Watch this space... there are 5 or 6 now (that I know of) who have approached us, but we're not doing old-party style deals!

Because IMHO people defecting and then being given senior positions in the group they've defected to is pretty rare....

So, UKIP have declined to give somebody who has been shown to be disloyal and prepared to suborn others in return for preferment, a senior post in their organisation. I think that shows them to be sensible, rather than principled

Defections on Kent historically have I think been rare. Actually I don't think they have historically been common at county level.

Brecon and Radnor, just up the road, they said, just come along the once they said. Bastards. Not sure if was politics or the sex-crazed blond that really did for me in my finals.
