I think giving up the leadership may be a tactical move. With Labour still having 10 out of 22 seats it remains the largest party, and the only possible alternative administration is a weak SNP / Independent coalition. Labour has now challenged them to form one and to take responsibility for next year's budget. If they do, they take the blame for any cuts they have to make. If they don't, Labour will come back in as a minority administration but with the SNP having little ability to reject the budget they propose.

And a line defected from National Rail (underground) to (TFL) Underground a couple of decades ago. Purchased by LUL from British Rail, just over three decades ago, just in case anyone wanted to feel old. It makes me feel young that I don't remember that at all. I may have if i was a southerner, but as a northerner my knowledge around this sort of thing kicked in in the late 1990s / early 2000s.

I don't remember it actually happening, but I do remember very well when it was BR, and quite often used it at that time as I studied at the Guildhall School of Music which is in the City. One day I sort of realised "oh, goodness, it's part of the Underground now" perhaps about 2 years after it happened. My usual journey to the GSMD however was from Richmond or Kew Gardens to Broad Street which was quite a short walk from the college, and most people just give you blank looks nowadays if you mention Broad Street station. (Although Paul McCartney paid tribute to it.)

Some of us are being given even more reason to abandon hope of finding a literate journalist.

Some of us are being given even more reason to abandon hope of finding a literate journalist. Grammatically, it is fine. Clearly she loosed somebody called Faith into the local Conservative Party

All does not seem well with WD Labour. The council comprises only 22 councillors. Which is 18 to few.

Suffolk, Belstead Brook (2025). Christopher Hudson, Conservative to Reform UK. Reform should be approaching hundreds of Conservative councillors with flattery. Then targetting ex councillors who lost seats. Then losing parliamentary candidates who feel let down. There is a lot of resentment to be mined.

So now a trickle of Con/Ind defections to Reform - I queried why this wasn't happening before the election but members rightly pointed out that the time was not quite right.

It might be in part because of a targeted recruitment drive. Recruiting NCOs who can easily vetted be instead of footsoldiers who cannot.

West Sussex, Arundel & Courtwick (2025). Gary Markwell, Independent (elected as Conservative) to Reform UK Given that Arundel, at district level, has a full complement of Green councillors, that could be an interesting contest next year.

Sounds like ‘disgruntled and failed to be reselected’ season has started early.

Their party conference is 20/21 September. They seem to be paying more attention to grassroots structures than previous incarnations of the party. It all feels a bit Dr Who... one version of the party dies, and another with a different face pops up....
