Interestng to see how many stand for election in 2026 and who pays their election expenses. Hopefully none. They will disturb the construction of the 'green wall' of Hackney Downs, Dalston, Clissold and Stoke Newington wards.

Redbridge (Churchfields Ward) Rosa Gomez LAB => IND Plus 'Fifty members' of Labour in Chingford and Woodford Green have resigned from the party, citing the treatment of their former candidate Faiza Shaheen. I feel a little conflicted over this matter. I cannot really justify what's happened to Faiza Shaheen, but it's quid pro quo for what Corbynites did in the past. As the Labour candidate for Chingford many years ago, against Norman Tebbit, I do desperately hope that all this doesn't enable Duncan-Smith to survive. I thought Keir's intention was to suppress party factionalism in the name of party unity to win the election. I don't see how this deselection supports that aim, but again I'm no longer a Labour supporter - so maybe someone who does support it can enlighten me.

Starmer has made a major issue of Labour under his leadership having a zero tolerance policy towards antisemitism. This is why we are where we are with Jeremy Corbyn. Left-wingers who have consistently recognised that antisemitism has been a serious problem in the party have been able to maintain their position as MPs, plus those who have shown contrition like Bell Ribeiro-Addy who once shared a platform with some very unsavoury people from the so-called Labour Left Alliance but apologised and did not repeat this. (The main exception to this was Lloyd Russell-Moyle who was on the end of allegations about his conduct but this happened too to Darren Rodwell who is on the Right.) Faiza Shaheen liked some very dodgy posts. Now we can argue about whether the response was disproportionate, but she really shouldn’t have done. You can say it was just factional and I’m not going to say it definitely wasn’t. But that was the reason and it’s consistent with Labour’s practice that people potentially will get into trouble if they like antisemitic social media posts. Barry Sheerman got away with his awful shekels comment but he would almost certainly have been treated with less leniency if he had announced that he was planning to stand for re-election. Personally I’d have suspended him from the whip but allowed him back if no repeat of such conduct had taken place (which to be fair to him it hasn’t)

Does beg the question why Faiza has been a candidate for a significant length of time if she's said things which aren't acceptable.

Does beg the question why Faiza has been a candidate for a significant length of time if she's said things which aren't acceptable. She has admitted to being foolish (but with the qualification that she knew her activity was being watched - so foolish to do something that she knew would be spotted, not necessarily foolish in the ‘like’ itself). That suggests a recent trigger point.

As was pointed out by andrea recently, two Labour candidates were dropped late on due to errant comments/social media stuff - Faiza and Graham Jones (the latter had his suspension lifted recently, but was not then allowed to contest Hyndburn as most had expected would be the case) One from the left and one from the right of the party. Similarly with late withdrawals due to allegations of personal misconduct- Lloyd Russell-Moyle on the left and Darren Rodwell on the right. If this was all some massive "purge" of the left, then it wasn't a very widespread or efficient one. Part of the problem may, again, be the mood music from certain party "sources" with the ear of political journalists. It wasn't just Diane Abbott who these people were going to prevent standing as a Labour candidate, but pretty much the entire Campaign Group of MPs. This was never a remotely realistic prospect, however.

However, I do think it's deeply unhelpful for another Labour member to consider the use of suspension or other disciplinary sanctions as a form of revenge - this is not conducive to suitability for a party seeking to govern the UK.

If there is a Labour landslide on the scale that is being mooted there will presumably be some weeding out of Labour MPs who should never have been selected - personality defects, unwise tweets/social media posts, corruption, etc. It's inevitable.

Isn't it a personality defect to seek election? (ducks, runs away)

That Graham Jones was so much as suspended was an absurdity. Even a warning would have been ridiculous.

Justice is what matters.

If you look at the selections as a whole, especially who were excluded from selection shortlists, you will see it massively benefits the right wing of the Labour Party. I don’t think anyone can seriously argue with that. Also all four mentioned above were replaced with those on the right. Whether you think it’s right or wrong is another matter.

Wyre, Marsh Mill (2027). David Higgs, Conservative to Reform UK This one is interesting, because Thornton isn't quite as fertile territory for Reform in Wyre, compared to places like Fleetwood. I wonder if he'll stick around.
