Ok, let's imagine that I was a Conservative PPC. Then Sunak announces that conscription is part of the manifesto. No consultation.
Yes, I would screw the national party over. I might not wish to screw the local party over. If the seat was paper, I would be comfortable doing so, if it was a likely hold, I would be reluctant to do that to the local party.

It's a rumour so far, but thought it worth logging: six Tory GE candidates considering defecting to Reform Andrea Jenkyns submitted a no confidence letter in Sunak so she would be a good guess.

West Northamptonshire, Nene Valley (2027). Phil Larratt, Conservative to Independent (Non-Aligned). Now reversed. The original change seems to have been due to a temporary suspension, so perhaps the investigation has now concluded.

And none of the three(?) actual Con-Lab defections in this parliament were rumoured beforehand Four if you include Mark Logan, and you probably should as his letter was actually written the day before parliament dissolved. But no, not many predicted him switching over either.

In Hackney, a new group rises:
Hackney, Clissold (2026). Fliss Premru, Independent to Hackney Independent Socialist Group. Hackney, Victoria (2026). Claudia Turbet-Delof, Independent to Hackney Independent Socialist Group. Hackney, Victoria (2026). Penny Wrout, Independent to Hackney Independent Socialist Group.
All three originally elected as Labour.

Kingshurst & Fordbridge (2022). The ward is (was) split three ways, 1 Green, 1 Con, 1 Lab, but the Greens were a long way behind Lab and Con in May.

He was a good member of the Co-op Party, among other virtues. I also feel I have to say that the furore over Diane Abbott, which he mentions, is a bit overblown. I can't remember Diane ever complaining about, for instance, Len McCluskey et. al. selecting European candidates, including in London. I think she's never been a serious politician.

I agree that the furore over Diane Abbot is misplaced. I do not recall her complaining in the Corbyn era about Labour MPs being abused when they highighted anti semitism existed in the Labour Party. The impression I had was that anyone who criticised Corbyn and his allies were targetted by Momentum and others.

Was any reason cited for the defection?

Similarly many moderates don't all set upon Diane Abbott. There are those of us on the corbynite left and the more moderate faction of the party that don't resort to abusive behaviour

Leicester, Abbey (2027). Nags Agath, Conservative to Independent. I presume this is the Nagarjun Agath who is standing as an Independent in Leicester East.
