Athwall cleared and back in the Labour group now. Quelle Surprise. Does anybody know what allegations were made against Athwal, who was the allegator, and whether the allegator is going to be democratised out of a third-floor window?

Sorry! missed this. I think we're now up to five members of the Labour group suspended... It's tit for tat at the moment. Berryman and Carlin were going to challenge for the leadership, so .... I think it may now be six. it's difficult to keep up. Let's hope they're not in different bubbles.

The best bit of the story is that there is a woman called Cosima in Burnley. I've never met a Cosima but that strikes me as an unlikely place to find one.

You'd be wrong - this is Cosima Towneley of the Towneley family - her uncle is Sir Peregrine Worsthorne and her father is the redoubtable Sir Simon Peter Edmund Cosmo William Towneley KCVO KCSG JP. The Towneleys have been here since before the Norman invasion. Towneley Hall is their former home and I am a (very) distant relative.

Well, I have definitely never met one in Burnage.

Got to say, Cosima would have no trouble in Longsight as her gunsmanship* far outweighs the "skills" of many of the fellows I knew from the old gang days. *If you tried to say gunswomanship or gunspersonship, she'd give you a head start before releasing the dogs, she is a sporting lady.

Strikes me as perfectly reasonable for a place that consumes that much Benedictine. Cosima is a genuine old-fashioned Tory and a decent honest person. Unusual in Conservative politics in Burnley over the years. The Liberal Democrats had already decided to pull out of the Executive (two positions) in protest at Briggs' decision to appoint Hosker to the Exec. Seems things have changed a bit this week! There was a deal agreed between the Labour and LD leaderships for a Lab-LD-BPIP Exec with a Labour leader but no single party in control. It seemed that the Labour group refused to accept that. Who knows what will happen now. (It's Burnley after all).

She was a Lib Dem until 2018. Might be a coincidence but In 2019 she, as an ex Lib Dem independent, was elected Chairman of the council and Councillor Bente Height, an ex Conservative Independent, was elected vice chair. Now Both have recently rejoined their former parties.

I can absolutely testify to the above as I am good friends with one of Cosima's many sisters. My friend once showed me a photo of Cosima semi-reclining on a chaise longue in hunting breeches, shotgun over the arm with a dog asleep on the rest of the sofa. It did rather look like she'd shot the dog! I often tell her that Cosima *is* the embodiment of Lady Maud from Blott on the Landscape in many ways. "Good god, thought you were a rabbit" as she takes pot shots etc etc. Very much a Tory of the ancient school. She is very upset with the arriviste lot from UKIP/Brexit Party but keeps her counsel publicly.

Full English for breakfast, white burgundy at lunch and a fat cigar in the evening. Three piece suit at all times. His step father was Montagu Norman "currency dictator of Europe" between the wars. Beyond the Queen I'm still amazed to think in 2020 we can reach back into that era in terms of direct connections to those who made the political weather.

Sir Simon is still going strong at 98 As is Peregrine of that ilk at 96. Peregrine appears on several General Election broadcasts. He looks old on the 1979 broadcast. Remarkable he has lived another 41 years.
