And the final set for 2018 with 3 LD defences, one of which they are certain to lose:
CHARNWOOD BC; Anstey (Lib Dem died) Candidates: BAINES, Paul Richard (Conservative) MCALLISTER, Glyn Stanley (Labour)
2015: Con 1552, 1163; LD 1179; UKIP 739; Lab 717, 443; Grn 417 2011: LD 1087; Con 989, 631; Lab 518, 335; BNP 215 2007: Con 934, 737; LD 883, 644; BNP 422 2003: LD 962, 659; Con 571, 372; Lab 130
The Labour candidate has been their top candidate in the last 2 elections here.
CUMBRIA CC; Kent Estuary (Lib Dem died) Candidates: ABEL, Jill (Green) HARVEY, Tom (Conservative) LOVE, Kate Malinda Holly (Labour) MCSWEENEY, Pete (Liberal Democrats)
2017: LD 1422; Con 995; Grn 162; Lab 103 2013: LD 1492; Con 676; Lab 159
The Conservative and the Green both stood here last year. The Lib Dem is incumbent councillor for Arnside & Milnthorpe ward on South Lakeland DC (see below – he finished third), having previously been elected to Arnside & Beetham ward in 2016.
SOUTH LAKELAND DC; Arnside & Milnthorpe (Lib Dem died) Candidates: ABEL, Jill (Green) ASHBURNER, Rachel Elizabeth (Conservative) CHAFFEY, Helen Elizabeth (Liberal Democrat) LOVE, Kate Malinda Holly (Labour)

The Conservative was the second Conservative this May and the Green was the top Green.

Any idea why there is no Lib Dem candidate? I don't know, but the failure to field a second candidate alongside the incumbent since 2011 maybe suggests a lack of willing candidates or local activists?

Am I right that these are identical boundaries? If so how many other cases are there of the same boundaries being used for both district and county?

There are a number in Carlisle. All of the district wards/county divisions in Norwich are identical. This was also true of Cambridge until quite recently

That's because the ward boundaries for Cambridge City were changed in 1976 but the county council boundaries stayed the same until 1985. They then cam back into line with one another.

It certainly wouldn't be obvious that these cover the same area. As it happens, I know Arnside very well, so was aware it was on the Kent estuary and could have guessed that the wards might be coterminous. A very nice area, always worth visiting.
