High profile December defections threatened to become a British tradition...

Given that Tommy Graham was expelled from the Labour Party I don't think he can count as a defection (unless Wikipedia has the timeline wrong).

The Prodigal Son? The Parable of Agreeable Claret Into Old Bottles? The Parable of the Tree and Its Fruits matches quite well too... ah, you're confusing parables with prophetic events. You'll have to watch the video if you are not to be mislead by false prophets... True, but the parables lend themselves to mocking the SDP!

I wouldn't have said that Nigel Evans counts. He has no issue with the party and that's what should count.

Indeed, as Deputy Speaker he wasn't taking the Conservative whip in the first place.

I assume that Nigel Evans probably sits on a Conservative bench.

The Conservative whip was restored to Nigel Evans this morning.

His sex life and drinking habits have effectively been ruled to be perfectly appropriate for an MP but not for Deputy Speaker. Which for what it is worth I would agree with. Not really. There is just no longer a deputy speaker post free so he needs to revert to being a Conservative MP

You must write either a comedy of manners or a monograph on moral and ethical standards in public life. It would be witty and interesting.

As far as I can see, Ed Milliband, David Cameron and George Osborne haven't been reselected either yet, along with scores of MPs from both parties, so that's a bit of a red herring.

Yes Stephen was reselected months ago , still truth and accuracy have never fitted well with the Conservative Party and the Telegraph .

Carswell to UKIP.
I repeat, Carswell to UKIP. This is not a drill.

Unexpected. At least, I didn't expect him to go, others were slightly higher on the list.

Clacton 2010:
Conservative Douglas Carswell 22,867 Labour Ivan Henderson 10,799 Liberal Democrat Michael Green 5,577
You know, a Labour victory isn't impossible here, with the right splitting of the UKIP/Tory vote and enough Lib Dem votes going to Labour... not likely, but possible.
