"The son of a bitch isn't going to resign on me, I want him fired" (Harry Truman on Douglas MacArthur, 1951) To be fair saying you’ll just not be part of the parliamentary group until you’re satisfied with a policy really isn’t something any leader could accept

So they suspend his membership over that but not certain other memberships or whips?

Hopefully Angus MacNeill will now stand for re-election as an Independent, and make it a three-way marginal.

He might stand as an Alba Party candidate? He'd stand more chance as an independent, tbh, and he probably knows it.

We want the psephological fun of a slplit result with a low percentage of the vote for the winner, but there are limits. We don’t want the Alba Party to be given extra credibility by his name and candidacy being attached to it. Alba can stand as well, but only get 200 votes or so. There could be a four-way scramble for 4th place between the Conservative Party, Lib Dems, Green and Christian Parties.

It's a seat where the individual candidate counts for far more than elsewhere (although the rise of a Tory vote suggests that there's a trend toward more ordinary elections). The electorate is tiny, equivalent to a large local government ward (although dispersed widely), and it's not unreasonable to expect the candidate to meet a very high proportion of voters. Speaking Gaelic fluently is critical as are local roots. and Christian faith still plays a pretty important part. I hope the Labour pick is working hard!

Well yes, up to a point. But the fact remains that since 1935 the only two parties who have either won or even been close here in parliamentary elections are Labour and the SNP. I'm not convinced that this is likely to change now.

Yes, it's a funny seat from a Conservative standpoint. Lost deposit to nearly a quarter of the vote in nine years, and I think one of the few seats in Scotland where our percentage went up in 2019. Has there been a particular campaign there recently, or have our candidates been particularly noteworthy? I know we have a Councillor there.

He might stand as an Alba Party candidate? Possibly. He is a good fit for them.

Of course he can't stand for the SNP. They've just expelled him. They won't readmit him in only a year's time.
