Aside from anything else, extremely useful for distinguishing the voiced phoneme from the voiceless one It would stop people (mostly southerners) mispronouncing my surname which has an eth in it, not a thorn. That's probably everywhere outside Yorkshire really. With our superior diction in the Mersey/Dee conglomeration, for example, your surname is pronounced entirely correctly, but not your preferred way...

She was a Yorkie wasn't she, so possibly the same as David. Perhaps gwynthegriff knows.

Welsh maintains the distinction with 'th' and 'dd', of course. It's useful.

Dost ðou, þank you. And as none of us know each oðer, it should be "you" The return of the thorn, and eth, is long overdue. Great minds, I was genuinely þinking þis þe oþer day.

I'd say it just like "Booth" with a long th, then royd. Sadly I don't know my thorns from my eths so no idea if this is right or wrong. My accent is middle class northern but not easily placeable within the north.

My accent is middle class northern but not easily placeable within the north. It depends how you pronounce "Booth". I pronounce it with an eth (meaning it rhymes with "smooth" and not with "tooth") which is the same as in the approved pronunciation of "Boothroyd", but some people pronounce it with a thorn. IPA /ˈbuːðrɔɪd/, Welsh-style Bŵddroed.

Icelandic has both ð and þ. The former is voiced, the latter unvoiced. Faroese has only ð, and it makes no sound of its own, though it sometimes acts as a glide consonant.

I have the misfortune of having a surname that has two different correct English pronunciations and being the minor variant. Added to that it's often misspronunced the French way - particularly and understandably here in Switzerland but also in London.

Can we get back on topic now please? That would be easier if there were actually some parliamentary defections to talk about.
