There was talk on the Beeb earlier of a Labour defector to UKIP, which sounds ridiculous.

When was the last time a Labour MP defected? Clare Short to independent?

When was the last time a Labour MP defected? Clare Short to independent? If you are going to count becoming an independent, but not counting when the whip is suspended then it was Robert Wareing in 2007. If moving to a different political party then it would be Paul Marsden in 2001 who joined the Lib Dems. Before that there was Dick Douglas joining the SNP in 1990. Too many to mention joining the SDP in 1981/2. The last one to join the Conservatives was Reg Prentice in 1977.

On the defection of SNP to Ind, does that rob the SNP of their overall majority then (or are the three Ind SNP members in favour of another bite of the referendum cherry) and the last confirmed Lab defection was Mr. Marsden in Shrewsbury from Lab to Lib Dem (and then back to Lab on the eve of polling) in 2003 - 2005.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by another bite of the referendum cherry at this stage.

I think Brian Sedgemore was actually the last Labour defector.

According to the God Wikipedia he is now an "international business consultant".

I think Brian Sedgemore was actually the last Labour defector. I was sat behind him at the Oxford Union the night he defected (he was meant to defect on the night, but it was leaked beforehand). Met him afterwards, fairly charmless.

Not a complete surprise to anybody who heard his speech in yesterday's debate - not just his opposition to military action, but the digs at the PM.

Didn't Bob Marshall-Andrews once say that he hoped that Reckless never inflicted himself on the electorate again?
