Knowing Galloway, even if he has two people willing to be supporters, he might well turn up on is own just to make a point. Then he can spout off to the press about how the good people of Bradford are being denied representation by archaic 17th century rules.

The rumour is that something along those lines did indeed occur - not unconnected, it is postulated, with manouevres by influential local Muslims.......

Another factor may have been that voters in Bradford West wanted someone who would put the city "on the map" so-to-speak. I'm sure the previous MP was a perfectly good representative but he didn't exactly make a big impact in Westminster. I can't remember having seen him speak in the House of Commons at all in the last 15 years and I've watched quite a bit of proceedings over that time.

I don't think he will have any problems with it at all. There are plenty of MPs who would be willing to do the job, including probably Caroline Lucas, Jeremy Corbyn, Plaid Cymru, other Labour MPs, SNP, and/or SDLP.

very good post and far more closer to the truth than some of the nonsense seen otherwise. I saw Galloway's speech and he never had a go at labour at all. He fought the campaign on one issue himself and the writer was right the failure to target Galloway cost them. However like in Bethnal in 3 years time it will come back when the truth is seen about him.

The more I read about the this the more it looks like the disenfranchised youth being the core of Galloway's support and this was what got him going in the campaign. Such strong support for him from the young was probably key to him winning over the biraderi vote (although no doubt in time honoured tradition there would also have been various promises and deals) in the last week of the campaign as the "leaders" suddenly realised that there was another credible option. This is the only way that I can account for the massive swing that was undetected by the canvassing teams.
Galloway is of course canny enough, and cynical enough, to win over the young by denouncing the corrupt biraderi system while simultaneously winning the backing of the biraderis.

There is some understanding of what happened starting to come out now.
...for whatsoever a man soweth, that also shall he reap...
Time perhaps for the Labour Party to think on.

Tony is indeed "noble" (arguably in more senses than one) but I am not aware of any internationally renowned prizes he has won?? :-p

I've worked on losing campaigns, and usually when you're on the receiving end of a 10,000 majority, you know about it. Eastwood. The closer you stood, the more it looked like a Tory gain. From Aberdeen, it looked a nailed on Labour certainty Inexperience also plays a role. You are allowed to have one colossally over-optimistic fuck-up. Following that point you should be expected to try to believe your lying eyes. I would hope, however, that regional Labour staff have experienced more than one campaign and I know for a fact they'll have presided over at least one fuck-up.

On the Britain Votes live forum I was speculating about the status of Galloway when he tries to take his seat. I understand he has found sponsors, and that one of them is probably the least likely MP of all (and therefore free of any taint that he is showing political favour to Gallowayism): the father of the House, Sir Peter Tapsell.

Gerry Sutcliffe (Lab, Bradford South) will apparently be the other one.

I actually think it's good for Galloway to be sponsored without problem.
(A) He's been democratically elected, however little we may like it. (B) It kinda undermines a wee bit his the establishment is out to get me rhetoric (C) It leaves him little excuse for his subsequent poor attendance at parliament.
