Ross (Herefordshire), Lonsdale (Lancs), St George (Tower Hamlets), St George (Westminster, admittedly Hanover Square was in the name at one point) and Howdenshire (East Riding) are all 1885 names that make you wonder where they are. Never heard of Ross-on-Wye? Or Lonsdale? Belt it up!

Never heard of Ross-on-Wye? It could just have easily been Ross in Northumberland or Ross in Ross-shire. Admittedly Ross was something of a tourist hotspot at the time which may have led it to being better known than it is now. Don't be silly neilm. Ross in the south-west in famous and historical. Nobody has heard of Ross in Northumberland which is a farm, two dogs and a haystack on the leftt of the road driving north on those straight undulating roads with blind summits in the middle of nowhere. And this Ross in Ross-shire where I live? Where exactly is it then? I don't know it?

Is it another typo? The point is that the Ross in Northumberland is minutely small and insignificant and unknown to 99% of the population and causes zero confusion to anything. And the Ross in Ross-shire does not exist at all. Ross is not a place at all. It means headland. This is all so reminiscent of the St. Ives discussion but with far, far less logic or evidence. Ross was an excellent name for a constituency.

Oh dear no. Sincere apologies to everyone!
I intended to type Ross/Ross-shire rather than claim there was a place called Ross.

Have you read Winifred Holtby's "South Riding" ? cant say i have You should give it a go, i think you'd enjoy it. Actually set in the East Riding of course - political novel of the 1930s. Televised twice on the BBC down the years.
