It's not the council that runs it in Northern Ireland, it's the EONI.

That's two highly unionist towns (Ballymena and Ballymoney), and one mainly nationalist one. But residents of the countryside will have a bit of trek to make it to any of these...

As I say, it might very well be an issue with finding sites acceptable to all. Because Northern Ireland has the politics of the playground.

Electoral Office of Northern Ireland "Recall petition 30 July 2018 Please note that, in accordance with the Recall of MPs Act 2015 the number of persons entitled to sign the Petition to Remove the MP for North Antrim, Ian Paisley is 75,478. The number of persons who would need to sign the petition to be successful in accordance with section 14 of the Act is 7,547." www.eoni.org.uk/News/Recall-Petition-Eligible-ElectorateNow that is very interesting indeed I say. 10% of the electorate is 7,547.8 and it is clear that the Electoral Office of Northern Ireland have chosen to round DOWN the number instead of the convention (of 0.5 or higher) to round up, therefore they have set a precedent. Does the actual law state that the number is rounded down or rounded up and if not, I am wondering if there could be some legal battles to come. The link now says 75,428 and 7,543. Have the numbers changed each day, or did you misread the figures?

Only 3 places opened in the constituency for people to sign, out of possible 10. Any views on this? Those three are the only places in the constituency you can call a town without feeling silly.

How far along is this recall petition progressing? Starts next week and will be open for just over a month but reportedly they won't be giving updates on the number of signature so we'll have to wait until September to have it confirmed that there will be an election i wonder if they will change that decision, and at least provide us with weekly updates ? although the SDLP/SF/UUP may have counters outside each of the three signing points (so they don't waste their time going miles over the 10% threshold - although that in itself might provide quite useful canvas information). but the DUP may send their supporters in to the signing points just to screw up the tally !

Do SF still have the manpower to do that?

Given that you can also sign the petition by post would it not make more sense to use those “activists from Belfast to Derry” to telephone canvass your known postal voters and “encourage” them to apply for and return a postal signature? That also addresses the problem mentioned upthread of there being some sizeable chunks of the constituency a distance away from the three signing centres.

Are SF that bothered? Even if they get the signatures, they have no chance in the by-election and will probably end up with Paisley again anyway.
