I'm afraid andrewteale has made a slight error in his otherwise excellent outline of Besses ward. The Elms estate is in Unsworth ward, not Besses ward.
It's an easy mistake to make as logically it would have made much more sense to have Elms in Besses and to keep the bits of Unsworth in Unsworth ward. Elms being part of Whitefield (with an M45 postcode). However, the boundary commission in their 2004 review decided otherwise. The partisan effect of that weird decision is that Unsworth is much more Labour leaning than it used to be and Besses is still rock solid Labour (just ever so slightly less so).
