To add in the colour I've already posted elswhere on the Besses by-election (plus a minor updatee):

The by-election was caused by the resignation of Labour councillor, Elizabeth Fitzgerald (last elected in 2016). There was a by-election in Besses just last year which was comfortably held by Labour. It is a very safe Labour ward, made up of the eastern end of Whitefield and parts of Unsworth. Labour strength comes from two large Manchester overspill council estates. The rest of the ward is mostly modest semis and bungalows, though it also contains much of Whitefield town centre with some tightly packed terraces. Despite being in Whitefield and north of the M60, it has a very inner Manchester feel to it. Unlike the other Whitefield ward, Pilkington Park, there is not much of a Jewish community in Besses.

As far as the campaign has gone, Labour, Lib Dems and Tories have all done 2 leaflets. Though the Lib Dem leaflets appear to have only been delivered in the more middle class areas, which would suggest they are running a spoiler campaign. The Lib Dems were second in this ward up until 2012.

The ever present English Democrat candidate has done a glossy full colour leaflet but it seems to be restricted to the area in walking distance from the candidate's house (which is the most affluent bit of the ward). The leaflet is a long rambling affair, mostly focused on attacking the Tories.

The UKIP and Green candidate have done absolutely nothing as far as I can tell.

Only the Labour and the Tories are running what could be called full campaigns. As I've said elsewhere, I've been surprised by quite how hard the Tories have worked Besses this time.

I would expect another comfortable Labour hold, winning over 50% of the vote. The most interesting question is what happens to turnout. It was only 28% in May. It could easily fall even lower in a by-election in mid-July.

That's in Northamptonshire, for the Conservatives. John Chanin was referring to Michael Zwierzanski, in Bury, for UKIP.
