Hazel Grove in the two 1974 polls saw Tom Arnold, Mike Winstanley and Allan Roberts face off. There was a much higher calibre line-up for Hazel Grove in 1979! Neither Viv Bingham nor John Lowe had the recognition of Messrs Winstanley and Roberts. Also in 1979, there was a 10.5% swing from Liberal to Conservative in Hazel Grove, a high swing for a key Con/Lib marginal.

Edwin Scrymgeour, the only Scottish Prohibitionist MP, became an MP by defeating Winston Churchill in Dundee in 1922 - he had tried to so in all previous elections since 1908 inclusive. Also standing in Dundee in 1922 was Willie Gallacher, who would eventually be the last Communist MP. Being beaten by a Prohibition candidate must have been a particularly sore point for Winston Churchill! I see that Scrymgeour was finally ousted in 1931 by the odd double-act of Dingle Foot and Florence Horsbrugh. I know it was a 2-seat constituency, but their votes in 31 and 35 are among the highest I remember seeing, the total votes cast in 1935 being 188,378. (What is the record number of votes polled by a woman?) Quite a contrast with the 1908 by-election that Churchill won with 7,079 votes.

Diane Abbott and Oliver Letwin in 1987 and Hackney North and Stoke Newington. Glenda Jackson and Oliver Letwin in 1992 at Hampstead and Highgate. Didn't Ed Fordham stand in the latter for the LD's - now a councillor in Chesterfield (or was that 1997?)?

He's not exactly a star, unless I'm missing something.

He's not exactly a star, unless I'm missing something. I am sure he is in his own household, nevertheless he still is in politics.

Roxburgh and Berwickshire 1987 Future Lord and party chief whip, Archy Kirkwood, was incumbent MP and stood for the LDs. Bears a resemblance to the actor Charles Hawtrey. Future Defence and International Trade Secretary, Liam Fox, stood for the Conservatives. Future BBC journalist, Editor of The Scotsman and Professor of Journalism at the University of Kent, Tim Luckhurst, stood for Labour.

My Craig book tells me that it was L. J[ames]. Callaghan and E. R. Dexter. Is that the cricketer Ted Dexter? Yes. It was his one and only attempt at a parliamentary seat. Thereafter he resumed his cricket career, but was badly injured the following year and never fully came back. Any further involvement in politics was strictly in the context of cricketing politics, which some would say is more vicious than conventional party politics. I'm sure plenty of other cricketers must have stood for election at various times. For instance, does anyone recognize this Middlesex all-rounder? I believe he defeated Trivia Test Match's Willie Rushton at a by-election in 1963...
