Jo Swinson first stood for parliament in 2001 in Hull East against John Prescott. Steven Dorrell (Oct 74) and Norman Lamont (70) also previously stood against him in Hull East.

Chesterfield by-election 1984, when Tony Benn was elected for the seat, one of the independent candidates was actor Bill Maynard, aka Selwyn Froggatt and also a veteran of several Carry On films. Nick Bourne was the Conservative candidate; he had fought Eric Varley there at the general election the previous year.

Brent East 1992: Ken Livingstone v Damian Green. Sticking with Brent East, Daniel Finklestein was the SDP candidate against Livingstone in 1987.

Edwin Scrymgeour, the only Scottish Prohibitionist MP, became an MP by defeating Winston Churchill in Dundee in 1922 - he had tried to so in all previous elections since 1908 inclusive. Also standing in Dundee in 1922 was Willie Gallacher, who would eventually be the last Communist MP. Being beaten by a Prohibition candidate must have been a particularly sore point for Winston Churchill!

Hazel Blears stood against Neil Hamilton in Tatton in 1992, or possibly 87.
Tatton has now had four high-profile MPs in succession.

The other successful candidate - Dundee was a two seat burgh - was actually more notable at the time than Scrymgeour: E.D. Morel.

I came to a discovery some time ago that in order to make it as a good Conservative MP you had to prove yourself, and what better testing ground than the South Wales valleys, therefore, once I have unpacked my books, may I be permitted to post the astonishing number of Conservative MP's (since 1885) who first stood in a Labour / Liberal heartland?

Only if you have your copy of form 168B appropriately signed. Oh dear, I'm sorry I only have Permit A38, having formally established the correct criteria for permit A39 having followed the requirement laid down in circular B-65. Does this mean that I have to reapply to the correct window?

Naomi Long and Peter Robinson stood eachother at the 2010 election for Belfast East.
Not so amazing, but Justin Madders stood against George Osborne at the 2005 Election in Tatton and Douglas Chapman also stood against Gordon Brown in 2010 for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath.

Blears was the Labour candidate for Bury South in 1992 She was widely expected to win, and indeed came quite close to doing so. At that time she was very much considered a Labour left winger btw. Back on topic, surprising the 1982 Beaconsfield by-election hasn't been mentioned yet. And not just because of the Labour candidate.....

Hmm yes, Tony Blair losing his deposit (below 12.5% in those days), but former and future MP Paul Tyler for the Liberal-SDP Alliance too, saving their £150. And an appearance by Lt Cmdr Bill Boaks as a bonus, but no OMRLP.

Naomi Long and Peter Robinson stood eachother at the 2010 election for Belfast East. Northern Ireland throws up a lot because of the changing parties and the tendency for Stormont members to contest Westminster. Sticking to Belfast East we find a lot of past, present and future leaders: 1979: Robinson (DUP) beat William Craig (former Vanguard leader but now in the UUP) and Oliver Napier (Alliance) 1983 & 1986: Robinson beat Napier twice more 1987 & 1992: Robinson beat John Alderdice (Alliance) 1997: Robinson beat Reg Empey (UUP) 2001: Robinson beat David Ervine (PUP) 2005: Robinson beat Empey again and Naomi Long (Alliance) 2010: Long beat Robinson Also standing in 2010 was rugby player Trevor Ringland (UUP on the UCUNF slate).
