Discuss notable examples of individual constituency battles where two or more of the candidates were big, nationally-known (at least to some extent) names (either at the time, had once been so or would later become so).
In the 1924 general election, Neville Chamberlain faced Oswald Mosley in Birmingham Ladywood, with the former achieving a majority of 77 votes.
In the 1987 general election, George Galloway defeated Roy Jenkins in Glasgow Hillhead.
In the 1997 general election, Michael Portillo was defeated by Stephen Twigg in Enfield Southgate, with the Lib Dem candidate being Jeremy Browne.

The Peckham by-election of 1982 - perhaps only the SDP candidate was especially well known at the time (though the NF candidate was not unknown) but one or two of the other candidates became well known subsequently en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peckham_by-election,_1982

David Owen's Tory opponent at Plymouth Devonport in 1983 was Ann Widdecombe.
Tony Blair's Tory opponent at Sedgefield in 2001 was Douglas Carswell.
There are also the two rather special cases of Neil Hamilton vs Martin Bell in 1997 and John Bercow vs Nigel Farage in 2010.

Islwyn 1992:
Neil Kinnock (Lab) vs. Peter Bone (Con)
The contest also featured the less well known Helen Mary Jones (Plaid Cymru), who would later be elected as AM for Llanelli on two non-consecutive occasions 1999 and 2007. Oh, and Screaming Lord Sutch was on the ballot there too, also constesting Yeovil and Huntingdon simultaneously, when it was possible to do so, but I think he only attended the Huntingdon count.
Speaking of Huntingdon, 1997, the naturalist David Bellamy stood there as a candidated for the Referendum Party.

Chesterfield by-election 1984, when Tony Benn was elected for the seat, one of the independent candidates was actor Bill Maynard, aka Selwyn Froggatt and also a veteran of several Carry On films.

Possibly a borderline example here:
Denbigh, October 1974- Whilst I'm not sure how well known the winning candiate Geraint Morgan (Con) was/is (he certainly wasn't the most talkative MP in the Commons), two of the losing candidates possibly have a bit more name recognition (well, here, at least):
Paul Flynn (Lab) & Ieuan Wyn Jones (Plaid Cymru)

Just thought of another one - North West Durham 1992 - Theresa May vs Tim Farron. Pete mentioned that. If John Pardoe counts (as a former candidate for the Liberal leadership and being the party's Treasury spokesman), he stood against Margaret Thatcher in Finchley in 1964.

Belfast South in 2015 saw 5 present or future MLAs standing, plus Bob Stoker of UKIP had previously represented the UUP on the Northern Ireland Forum.

In the 1994 Barking by-election, Margaret Hodge won by a landslide whilst both Theresa May and Gerard Batten both did very poorly. Philip Hammond also did very poorly against Stephen Timms in Newham North East, on the same day.

Edwin Scrymgeour, the only Scottish Prohibitionist MP, became an MP by defeating Winston Churchill in Dundee in 1922 - he had tried to so in all previous elections since 1908 inclusive. Also standing in Dundee in 1922 was Willie Gallacher, who would eventually be the last Communist MP.

1906 - Glasgow Blackfriars and Hutchesontown saw future Labour leader George Barnes defeat future Conservative leader Andrew Bonar Law.
1908 - Manchester North West by-election - Winston Churchill lost to William Joynson-Hicks, the future Home Secretary, opponent of Prayer book revision and deliverer of the equal right to vote.
