Bunch of letters in today's Grauniad praising the cultural policies of the DDR and claiming that all that Stasi business wasn't all that terrible really. Remarkable.

Bunch of letters in today's Grauniad praising the cultural policies of the DDR and claiming that all that Stasi business wasn't all that terrible really. Remarkable. Some people never learn. And worse still, some people already learned and actively try to pretend that their own wishful thinking trumps other people's genuine suffering.

History has been made, Bodo Ramelow of Die Linke will be the next Minister President of Thuringia. The Linke/SPD/Green coalition will have a majority of 1? No room for any disagreements there..

They would go out of the Landtag, but not the districts where there is a 3% threshold rtaher than 5%.
The Hamburg electoral system is quite complicated, it is not simple MMP
As it says in the electoral law
Jeder Wähler hat zehn Stimmen:
fünf Wahlkreisstimmen für Kandidaten im Wahlkreis fünf Landesstimmen für Kandidaten auf den Landeslisten oder für Landeslisten in ihrer Gesamtheit.
The added fun is that not all Wahlkreisen have five seats, some only have three or four.
This will be the first time that the franchise has been extended to 16 and 17 year olds in Hamburg.

It should be strongly noted at this point that Hamburg is about as representative of the German electorate as Ceredigion is of the English electorate.

It did, however, have a highly exciting Black-Green coalition for a while and it is more representative than this year's other Landtag election - Bremen.

Hamburg certainly has reverted to normal service in recent years hasn't it. Just a bit. Gives the FDP some hope as well. Noticeable that there seems to be no slightly angry/very ridiculous populist party for a change, although AfD have probably pissed on all their chips.

The West German SPD - the Hansa made flesh.
(I mean that positively by the way)

Bad result for CDU down to 16%. AFD set to enter the first Western state parliament and the FDP keep their seats, so Liberalism is not dead in Germany.
