Outlandishly, it is possible for the CDU to pull off a majority government in Sachsen. They should win all their 58 seats again and if the polls are correct, they could add on the other two as well both of them only have very small SED majorities. If you lose AfD, FDP and NDP, depending on the second vote splits, they might just be able to pull off a list seat or two.
It would be amusing if the FDP staying in Thüringen and losing in Sachsen considering they've actually been decent to good in Sachsen and they've been fecking useless in Thüringen,

It would be a phenomenal achievement to have a majority, but even more unusual with the state that, in its Weimar incarnation, was possibly the least stable of all the Laender!

Sachsen goes to the Polls on Sunday. Knife-edge for the NPD in Saxony, I'd imagine that any sign of a surge for the AfD would pull them under the 5% as it would likely be their soft, anti-party vote that crosses over. My hopes are now high that Brandenburg will kick out the SED. I'd like to invite Richard Cromwell to this discussion as I'd be interested to see what he might know about the Republikaner and the NPD that we might not.

BueSo! They're back! The only German party who would make me vote SED. They've never really gone away, it's just that with some many Kleinparteien to vote for, they don't get the attention any more. I was more interested in the return of the DKP who previously have lurked in the darker corners of the SED's list. Yeah, BüSo or SED would be a tricky choice, I'd spoil my paper and write Zentrum all over it.

Klaus Wowereit is to quit after thirteen years due to the airport fiasco business. Good grief, there was no hint of that in the Berlin Press this weekend, although I didn't really read much of the Sundays. BER is still believed to be at least 2 years away. At this rate U5 will meet U55 before the damn place is open*. The S-Bahn problems haven't helped him either.

Spoil it with Zentrum or something really obscure like the CNBL.

They are, of course, not to be confused with the KPD (1990) who are standing in Sachsen and who were, of course, Oncle Erich's final party after he was expelled from the SED. There are, of course, various other tiny groups of splitters.

Whilst I appreciate the nod and apologise for not getting to this soon (been having a lot of computer trouble), I'm afraid I have very little information to share. I knew quite a lot about the Greeks (Golden Dawn) and a little about the Swedish (Sweden Democrats) and the Italians (Casa Pound), but even that information is a year or so out of date (my interest peaked the former were riding high). I've got a lot of knowledge stored up on the German far-right (and left, now that I mention it) but its limited to a particular time period (ending with what little I now about the Declaration of Venice).

Whilst a crude comparison, saying that the Republikaner are the spiritual descendants of the DNVP and the NDP of the NSDAP might clarify things a little.

That's probably fair. REP have always struck me as just being a hard-right CDU split-off, but I sense you're correct. They're probably more like the FPOe than the OeVP, to use the Austrian example.

The SD info would be interesting on the Swedish thread that's going, especially as one chap on there has difficulty understanding what a fascist party is and isn't!

Last poll yesterday for Saxony for ZDF: CDU: 40.5%, SPD: 15%, G/B90: 5.5%, FDP: 3%, AfD: 7%, NPD: 5%, SED: 19% The NPD growth, which I must admit surprises me and I hadn't noticed, appears to have been at the expense of the SED, which means that totalitarianism is clearly alive and well. The Greens appear to be on a downturn, and it's not inconceivable that the Greens, NPD and FDP could all slip out of the Landtag. Over in Brandenburg, latest poll for the Maerksiche Allgemeine: CDU: 27%, SPD 33%, Green 5%, SED 21%, FDP 2%, AfD 7%. www.wahlrecht.de/umfragen/landtage/index.htmNote that AfD are apparently polling strongest in Saxony and Baden-Wuerttemberg.
