Dear Lord, is that an official announcement? If so, they need somebody to proof-read for them.

Dear Lord, is that an official announcement? If so, they need somebody to proof-read for them. The random capitalisation of By-Election is very Trumpesque, maybe that's what they were going for...

I think we do have to ask ourselves why this is. I agree with Adam it is certainly not because women in general aren't interested in politics per se, maybe generally less interested in the nerdiness beloved of many of us here, more interested in actual social outcomes perhaps. But are we in some way putting women off when they do show an interest? Maybe very early in the process, so it would be interesting to know whether a higher proportion of women browse as visitors but never commit to joining, let alone actually posting? The abrasive style of certain posters here would I suspect be fairly off-putting to a lot of female would-be posters. Might be interesting to have some women only threads I think this is the same of anoraks of all descriptions, not just psephology and all it entails. Birdwatching, trainspotting, memorising which date each episode of Star Trek was first broadcast, quoting entire films word for word et cetera. Women tend to go for things like fashion and celebrity gossip. Obviously I'm generalising here. My grandmother was very interested in politics but as soon as I started talking about voting data you could tell that she completely lost interest although she politely pretended to be for a few minutes.

I wouldn't say I did either - but I don't have any great desire to offend people. I can remember when traditionalist Conservatives believed in things like courtesy and politeness. And not offending people for no good reason.

The lack of women on here is surely just down to the fact they tend to be less interested in politics than men. No, it's because they tend to be less interested in railways and real ale than men. Or a Preston bus station

Is electionleaflets.org the only website that people post leaflets to?
It would be good to have regular uploads somewhere of what material goes out from all parties in Lewisham East.

And now we return to Lewisham East... Who is this "we" for whom you pompously presume to speak, you deranged and insane beardy weirdo? The rest of us normal people are perfectly capable of having a civilised conversation about the meaning of words, without the need to go to Lewisham.

Being a woman, I feel I have to admit I am regular on this site for a number of years, but due to working in a highly political sensitive post with all parties, I tend to read the posts than contribute. I am more interested in local politics, like a lot of the stats some of the folks have produced. I do also like fashion, jewellery, shoes and travelling :-) which I am also known for. I think there could be a number of other reasons why women don't contribute, one could be if they have kids - the free time is not as plentiful not that i have any. it is just a fault.

It's one of those things we've tried to tackle for many years on this forum. We are predominately male, and predominately nerdy, and it's no surprise if women take a step back from contributing because of the rather dry content we produce. However the women we do have as regular contributors do have interesting and quite different things to say. It's just unfortunate that men outnumber women around here to quite the degree they do.

I dunno, it's having kids that gives me the time to be on here. Essentially most of the time I should be (a) at work earning money or (b) at home doing housework, most of it generated by the kids* It's the latter times when I'm bored enough to slope off to the computer like a slacker and no-one can stop me. Looking after pre-school kids is like that for hours on end, it's why so many mothers feel they've lost their identity and a big cause of Post-Natal Depression. Mumsnet is busy enough. IMO women are just as political as men but usually less geeky and this is a pretty geeky place, especially the core psephological stuff. Loads of the off-topic stuff is just non-political geekery about trains, beer, medieval history and Preston bus station. * if I lived alone I could relapse into total squalor and no-one would care.
