Not in my real world the non-snoflake world we didn't. And I was there at the time. Im not a snowflake- you can call me anything you please, but if you continue you’re just going to : a) Upset other posters; and b) End up from being banned from here Now I don’t want either of those things to happen. There’s an art of compromising with others in politics (and life), even when you are convinced you are right. Even when you are right. This is probably one of those times. That’s said with the best will. Banned for use of a perfectly good word in use my whole life. Is that your brave new world? Welcome to it. there has to be a stand against blithering idiocy and i am making it.

Sounds like it will be an all-woman shortlist, then an all-woman all-BAMEshortlist, then an all woman allBAME, all lesbian shortlist? When they have achieved the ultimate candidate of their desires Crippled black lesbian blind, deaf and unable to understand the English language... Hackney North?

I don't care whether carlton43 is banned to be honest, because I'm going to stop contributing. The atmosphere is not only one which is too tolerant of racist, sexist & anti-disabled comments (for a site with an apparently goodly number of moderators), but it's just too testosterone-filled in general. There are no regular female contributors whatsoever, and, while that won't bother carlton and some of the rest of you, I think it's a terrible indictment of the atmosphere on the site. In contrast UK Polling Report, for all its many faults, at least has some female contributors. I may return one day, but it's barely readable at the moment. Bye. The lack of women on here is surely just down to the fact they tend to be less interested in politics than men.

There are no regular female contributors whatsoever Sharon and @vintris are notable exceptions. zoe also, although she reads more she than posts at the moment. But it has always been this way, not because anyone is preventing or discouraging women from joining in, but because they choose not to do so.

What is all this about? Since when did we ban the use of the word cripple for Woden's sake? I regard these posts as personal harassment and attempts to cause mischief. According to Wikipedia it was seen as degoratory by the 1970s I had to look it up to check. You are right; that is what it says. I was surprised though. Obviously, I am aware that “disabled” is the usual term, and that “crippled” is harder, in my mind indicating a more severe form of physical disability. You learn something every day.

Without wishing to start another war can I just say that the use of the word crippled is grossly offensive, although that was probably your intention, and if you’re going to use language that went out of use decades ago then why not substitute black for the n-word, and lesbian for dyke? Don’t bother replying; in order to avoid another outpouring of sympathy for you I’m unsubscribing from this thread as clearly you are on a mission to take it into the gutter. What on earth is wrong with crippled/cripple/Cripplegate? Why is it inferior to the rather prissy and negative disabled? And no it was not deliberate or a wind up, just an established usage of a perfectly good word used without a second thought because I had not noticed it needed a second thought. Why are we at the state of departing in a huff because someone uses a perfectly good old word in its proper context? Was that so bad as to trump knife crime, rape, invasion and child abuse. What the Woden is wrong with some of you? The "c" word you used is a horrendously outdated term, one whose definition has gone from "literal" to "slur". There are many other words like it we no longer use for quite good reason. A person is not "c........." these days, they have a life beyond their disability. To use that term is to anchor them to a prejudice. THAT SAID, I appreciate that you are of a generation for whom "c........" is merely an expression. It has perhaps passed you by that its use has garnered a weight which makes it too loaded to use in public.

THAT SAID, I appreciate that you are of a generation for whom "c........" is merely an expression. I'm glad someone has pointed that out. I'm sure many of us have - or fairly recently had - older relatives who use(d) expressions which are not considered as acceptable as they once were, without them even realising it. Which words do we use at the moment which we won't be able to use in 50 years' time? Anyway, Labour hold in the by-election...

(Labour hold, LibDem surge, WEP lose their deposit, more candidates than Haltemprice & Howden, etc etc etc)

For what it's worth, I don't think it's necessary for anybody to jump on top of carlton43 just because he used the word "crippled". I did notice it when I first read his comment, but I went past it without flinching because it was used in its perfectly normal context for someone of Carlton's generation. It may be a word which is old-fashioned to the rest of us, but it is not anything like as offensive as the n----- word for black people, or the m----- word for people with dwarfism. It is only on the same level of offensiveness as when my parents say "handicapped" instead of "disabled", or "coloured" when they mean "black". It's normal for people of that generation, and I do not for one moment think that Carlton was trying to be offensive or provocative (or even trolling for a reaction) when he used it. If the rest of you stop getting so hysterical about it, Carlton might take on board the fact that the context of the word has changed a bit in the last 50 years, and he might adjust his vocabulary next time.

I have always had the impression that the demand for All Women Shortlists was generated internally - from within the activist base. I have never had the sense - at anytime since this began to be imposed on us in the mid-1990s - that there was a great yearning from the wider electorate to have more women MPs as a matter of principle. To date , I have persuaded three other people to abstain here in Norwich North at the next election - and hope to build on that. If you really think that this issue takes precedence over who runs the country's foreign affairs, exchequer, defence, health service and public services, that's your right, but it sounds pretty obsessive & a muddling of priorities to me. What is wrong with saying crippled? I say it from time to time. It's outdated, prejudicial, judgemental, rude, and asserts dominance.

The evolving of acceptable language over time is one that has always.interested me. I was intrigued last year when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates decreed that instead of disabled people, the new definition is ‘People of Determination’.

That might be well meaning but it’s incredibly patronising.
