Hmm. Don't know the cause - the two sitting councillors Steve Lewis and Jennifer Rowlands are both still listed on the council website. Luton's in the middle of reselections which has led to a lot of sitting Labour councillors losing. I'm assuming it's in place of Jennifer Rowlands - her Twitter is now protected, and her LinkedIn page says "May 2015 - Jul 2018"

Vacancy in Upper Meon Valley, Winchester City Council - don't know the details Seems to be resignation of Amber Tresahar (elected as Amber Thacker). Makes the council composition now C 22, L Dem 21, Ind 1 (Kim Gottlieb), Vac 1. So: If the Conservatives lose, they would lose control of the council, but it is one of the safest Conservative wards.

Indeed-I just noticed that the Labour candidate's name is Scarlett O'Hara (and there is no candidate on this ballot paper called Rhett Butler, just so we are clear ).

Plus:
4 October Hambleton DC, Thirsk - Conservative resigned
At least I'm assuming Janet Watson resigned, as she was still being an active councillor at the beginning of August.

Denby Dale, Kirklees - Billy Jewitt resigns due to ill heath. Huddersfield Examiner are giving the date as 1st November but can’t find any confirmation on that. Elected as a Conservative this May with a majority of 237 over Labour. That is an important by-election for control of Kirklees. Labour took control in May but could lose it again next year if results go against them. Denby Dale was one of their targets in May and winning it now would probably secure control. Of course it is also in Dewsbury constituency, a hard fought marginal. Denby Dale is one of those rural former mining area wards in the North that is probably trending Tory

Pending by-election in Ditton ward, Halton Council, Labour defence, reason - disqualification for non-attendance. Not Trident, formerly of this parish.

There appears to be a very rare council byelection in Northern Ireland coming up - Carrick Castle ward of Mid and East Antrim, vice James Brown (Independent). A long time ago he was in the UUP. Normally councillors are replaced automatically by co-option, but presumably Brown didn't name anyone so there's got to be a byelection. (See: Electoral Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1962 (Amendment) Order 2010)
