That looks like it strengthens the SPD's hands in coalition negotiations. They could say to the Greens that the FDP are a possibility.. Whether or not they want any change. In many ways the SPD result is less than striking numerically being nearly solely causesd by the Left and Green falls. But in terms of dominance that is churlish as they have seen off the CDU. The FDP result feels a bit bizarre. At the beginning of the thread a reference of turkeys and christmas was made. These turkeys seem to have survived. Which begs the question as to where the Pirate vote came from. The CDU vote seems unlikely so a lot of churn seems in order.

Yes, Hannelore Kraft is in a very strong position now as she technically also has the pirates to choose from in theory (even though the SPD probably wouldn't go down that road).
I agree the Wählerstromanalyse will be fascinating here.

At some point an election result is going to land the Pirates with the responsibility of choosing a government. May be funny to watch. And before anyone points it out I do see the irony of my saying it having been on thje LD FE after 2010.

As a hunch, they are dipping into various pools, they are bringing in some new voters, they have taken some of the Green surge of last year and they are taking some votes from the SED and from the various others. I think that the Red-Green partnership in NRW will continue, but the SPD may use their new strength to improve their bargaining position. An interesting vote, their Fraktionleader didn't get elected, he had a high list place, but the SPD got no list seats. I think it looks reasonably certain than the Piraten get into the Bundestag next year, the FDP still look dicey.

Are there still any conservatives in the SPD? I think that they disappeared around the same time as the CDU expelled its Bolshavik faction!

Great map. However, I do believe the CDU's colours are black and orange!

Their proper colour is black (because they're the successor party to Zentrum), but they've often been shown as blue in media stuff going back ages. Orange is some silly re-branding nonsense. And is now the Pirates colour.

And is now the Pirates colour. I see your point, but Zentrum never really went away, it's just that many of their non-tainted leading lights and the church moved to the CDU. The Helene Wessel split was probably the last straw. They were also hit hard by the boundary changes post 1945, whilst Pommern was a dead zone for them and Ostpreußen was limited, they had substantial power in Schlesien and the Grenzmark. They still get representation on some councils in the Neuß area, I think they are even in the Kreistag in Rhein-Kreis Neuß but only because it doesn't have the Fünf-Prozent Hurde. And the Union parties are Black.

Oh, I know technically, yes. Technically. They did actually win one of the Duisburg seats in the 1950s IIRC.
