Ah I was wondering what unbegrenzt was. My German is decent enough but as with Dutch (and to a lesser extent French) my vocabulary is frustratingly small I didn't really know the word but Grenze is border, so read it as "unbordered". I can stagger through a red top newspaper in German - 3 years here now and obviously you do pick up vocabulary, but can barely a sentence together orally. I just don't understand the accent here. Well, you are in Switzerland. The local sociolects are very divergent from Swiss Standard German as it is written and indeed from each other. It's easier I understand on the other side of the Röstigraben. When you know your CHUCHICHÄSCHTLI from your CHÄS-CHÜECHLI, you'll be fine.

Tagesschau has a headline: "CDU- suddenly a protest party". A big result for Merz.

In terms of FPTP seats compared to 2021 it was a CDU landslide. CDU 48 up 27 Green 20 down 4 SPD 4 down 21 left 4 down 2 AFD 2 no change Apart from one CDU seat in the center and two AFD seats on the outer edge its a CDU outer Berlin vs a mainly Green inner.

Is there a particular reason why the SPD appear to have got such a hammering?

Is there a particular reason why the SPD appear to have got such a hammering? You mean in the meaningless fptp count? Equitable vote distribution. It's even worse in the list vote where they aren't ahead anywhere. Or just in general? Well who of the coalition partners has been in charge for longest, is lead by the most ridiculous person, and is mostly in the way of the government getting anything done because they're happy with the status quo? Not so unlike the federal FDP come to think of it.

Is there a particular reason why the SPD appear to have got such a hammering? The state government which they lead is by far the least popular state government, their voters are split on many of the current and potential policies of the state government, and the national polling is pretty bad for them as well. They’re basically in power (and potentially staying in power) by virtue of Berlin having an ingrained left wing majority and the SPD being the largest party within that heavily split left wing bloc, certainly not due to genuine popularity of the party and its administration.

Yes, there might be a serious case for the Berlin SPD going into opposition to a CDU/Green administration now.

Yes, there might be a serious case for the Berlin SPD going into opposition to a CDU/Green administration now. Assuming the latter 2 want to form it, which given the Berlin Greens are very left wing and the CDU have ran a campaign against how incompetently left wing the state government is, might be a tough agreement to reach (but it is in the SPD’s interests should it happen).

I can see two reasons to argue for a blackgreen/blackred government. If you're a red/green and don't love the other party and are ready to wait three years. (Edit: there should be some left supporters taking the same view I guess? Though the party's almost-decent-if-you-squint, better-than-feared result came from people making double sure their vote couldn't bs used to prop up a CDU gov't) Or if you're CDU and feeling safe in the knowledge that it won't happen anyways and are trying to make the most possible rhetorical hay out of yr win while the sun shines.

Is a red-purple-green (SPD/Linke/Green) administration a possibility other than in mathematical terms?

Is a red-lilac-green (SPD/Linke/Green) administration a possibility other than in mathematical terms? It's a certainty.
