Penycate was also one of two Green candidates in the Rotherham locals this May, polling 6.2% in Rotherham East ward. Okay, so they do exist, next most likely reason then is the local branch didn't have money to waste on a deposit?

Apparently the overlooked Cllr Hussain has called for "unity" in the local party and for his backers to support Champion (dunno about the Indies, but none ring a bell) . he was the only one who could seriously hurt us, if this is true then simple win

I'm just going on what somebody said on LabourList, mind........
If true, however, the cynical might suspect he has been promised something at the next GE in return for staying loyal now??
(don't forget there are rumours that Kevin Barron might stand down in the neighbouring seat)

Could 13 be the lowest score to be selected in a Labour held seat? We don't see the vote tally in every selection, so we can't probably be certain anyway. It's 8 fewer than I got in an election for a Labour branch secretary in 1975 - hell, it's four less than my incumbent opponent got

According to Michael Meacher, the NEC shortlisting panel was composed by Tom Watson, Angela Eagle, Keith Vaz, Harriet Yeo (TSSA Union and failed Kent PCC candidate) and Jim Kennedy (UCATT union). Always according to Meacher, Hussain was rejected 3 to 2 (Yeo and Kennedy were his 2 votes).
The 3 newly elected Labour MPs have been sent to Rotherham today with the usual red balloons. /photo/1
I believe John Healy has been appointed as Labour campaign manager.

Would be interesting to know why Watson didn't give him the nod, in particular (always assuming Meacher is correct!)

The only candidate who actually lives in Rotherham is the BNP candidate. Clint Bristow appears to be from the English Defence League www.hopenothate.org.uk/news/article/1965/edl-member-gets-asbo-over-park-clashSimon Copley is apparently a Reverend from next door Rother Valley. Paul Dickson lives in Wansbeck so it doesn't look like there is anyone who can pose a serious threat to Labour. Surprised the Greens couldn't find anyone - must be a while since they didn't stand in a by-election.

I am indeed a reverend living in Rotherham Borough (One of only 2 candidates who do) - I am not a Labour walker-outer although my great grandfather was a founder member of the ILP in 1896, apparently - he would turn in his grave...
Latest betting odds place me 4th as a 25/1 outsider behind Labour Respect and UKIP - but ahead of Libs, Cons and BNP! Now if I was a betting man...! Just as well I'm not really - dreadful habit tsk tsk tsk etc - LOL

Can you tell me where those odds were? It will be worth losing my deposit just to see those odds in black and white! I am still laughing! Seriously tho, it shows I have a chance and am a moderate and credible alternative to Respect and UKIP. I call on all Lib Dems to support me! You are going 2 get caned so why not vote for the only other moderate left? Help me put the wind up Respect & Labour?

I was in Rotherham today, saw a Labour leaflet with the usual crap on. They want voters to 'send a message to David Cameron'.
Respect was out in an A-frame campaign van, with someone shouting 'Vote Respect' out of a megaphone. A full week before the election, I think it's a waste of time.
The BNP has also put out a black and white leaflet accusing UKIP of having an immigration policy that will 'replace the indigenous population' and the 'Pro-EU left wing BBC love Nigel Farage etc etc'. It's quite comical.

Incidentally, Alan Hope didn't realise that the Rotherham by-election had been called until it was too late for him to stand (because he was busy in Manchester Central). He would have waned to stand if possible, because it was in Rotherham that David Sutch got 1,114 votes in 1994.

He implicated you in him not knowing soon enough! I'm sure he didn't mean it though, as he was completely pissed when he arrived at the count. I was rather envious!

It's quite comical. Those claims arn't comical, the first one is backed up by UKIP's own manifesto which denies there is an indigenous population and that anyone can be British as long as they adopt "British values". In other words UKIP believe anyone can be "British" if they learn to speak English and eat a sunday roast. UKIP call this "uniculturalism". Its bonkers.

Am I right in thinking the BNP offered to negotiate a merger/alliance with UKIP, an idea rejected by Nigel Farage?
