This isn't the first or last time that this sort of walkout or protest has happened. There were a number of places that were unhappy with having an all-women shortlist imposed on them for selecting candidates for the 2010 general election.
To be fair to labour, a number of these women have turned out to be good MP's but their manner of their selection wasn't.
Walkouts can happen for all parties when there is a split over who to select. However the NEC has not dealt with this well. A local man or woman on the shortlist would have been good.

Could 13 be the lowest score to be selected in a Labour held seat?
We don't see the vote tally in every selection, so we can't probably be certain anyway.

One thing favouring Champion is that the "anti-Labour" vote is likely to go off in several different directions. That tendency might arguably be increased if the refuseniks put forward their own "local Labour" candidate.......

We've gone for Jane Collins, of Barnsley 2011 fame.

If someone who walked out of that Labour selection meeting has put their name forward, this could make this by-election considerably more interesting - perhaps just as much or even more so than Corby. With all the palaver over the Dennis MacShane scandal as well, could there be a repeat of Blaenau Gwent? I think there is a chance, as there is potential for a strong vote for an Independent candidate here.

Peter Laws aren't two a penny, any more than George Galloways are.

Full list of candidates:
Michael Beckett - Liberal Democrat Clint Bristow - Independent Sarah Champion - Labour Jane Collins - UKIP Simon Copley - Independent Paul Dickinson - Independent Ralph Dyson - TUSC Marlene Guest - BNP Yvonne Ridley - Respect David Wildgoose - English Democrat Simon Wilson - Conservative
Not sure if any of those Independents are amongst the Labour members who walked out. That name Wildgoose looks familiar.

The only candidate who actually lives in Rotherham is the BNP candidate. Clint Bristow appears to be from the English Defence League www.hopenothate.org.uk/news/article/1965/edl-member-gets-asbo-over-park-clashSimon Copley is apparently a Reverend from next door Rother Valley. Paul Dickson lives in Wansbeck so it doesn't look like there is anyone who can pose a serious threat to Labour. Surprised the Greens couldn't find anyone - must be a while since they didn't stand in a by-election.

Wildgoose could well be the same person who stood for the LibDems in this seat in the May 1994 by-election (and came runner-up to MacShane) I do recall hearing a while back that he had left them for pastures (considerably) further to the right........
Apparently the overlooked Cllr Hussain has called for "unity" in the local party and for his backers to support Champion (dunno about the Indies, but none ring a bell)
Oh, and the Greens have skipped quite a few by-elections since the GE - including Barnsley in these parts last year.

The Greens haven't stood in Barnsley, Inverclyde or Leicester by-elections in this parliament. In the last parliament we didn't stand in Glenrothes, Blaenau Gwent, Dunfermline or Cheadle.

Rotherham may simply be devoid of Green activists, or even members. It seems to be a similar demographic to Motherwell and Wishaw which, to the most recent knowledge I have, now has zero Green members. EDIT Also been confirmed to me by a local that this is the same Wildgoose from the 1994 by-election.

The Greens did however manage a candidate here in the 2001 and 2005 General Elections who polled 2% and 3% respectively.
