Update: I think LabourList mispelt her name and it's Sophy Gardner. She is a member of Labour Friends of Forces, former RAF commander. Also shortlsited in Feltham & Heston And Cardiff South

BBC's Political Editor for Yorkshire and the North Midlands reports “Chaos at the #Labour Party selection meeting in #Rotherham as half the members walk out in protest because no local candidate short listed” More here twitter.com/TinglepoliticsThe ones who didn't walk out have selected Sarah Champion.

Probably the right choice. I can imagine Sister Yvonne getting into a right tizzy about an ex-Forces person. She'll find it more difficult to attack someone who has managed a children's hospice - not that will stop her.

According to twitter: of 110 members attending, 60 walked out, 50 stayed to choose a candidate, only 29 voted, Champion won by 13-11, and there were five spoilt ballots. If accurate, it could hardly have gone worse for Labour.

Are we likely to see a disgruntled local candidate stand as an Independent?

After a selection like that, there will be great pressure on the NEC to authorise a speedy reselection. If they do, they might have a chance of minimising the damage - but they might just conclude that Rotherham is not going to be lost, and plough ahead.

If they do, they might have a chance of minimising the damage - but they might just conclude that Rotherham is not going to be lost, and plough ahead. If the NEC chose to order a reselection it would be an implicit admission of incompetence or malfeasance in creating an unacceptable shortlist. It's not hard to see why they might be reluctant to do that. Anyway, I'm not sure the rulebook even allows such a thing. Given that the swing in Stoke Central was no worse than in neighbouring seats, despite the chaos involved with that selection, there's reason to believe there won't be a big impact anyway.

This screaming about a lack of a local candidate when the woman selected is certainly that ought to raise eyebrows.

Perhaps because it doesn't actually exist?? No, that's right. Phil Hammond closed it. It is a matter of public record Bish. You can deny it all you like. I will post the details when I get. home The continuous denials are absolutely pathetic. See this little number from the NAO from 2009. If you want more just let me know. www.nao.org.uk/publications/0910/mod_major_projects_report_2009.aspxBump

And she's been a member of Labour for a shorter period than she's been a resident of Rotherham, apparently.

True enough, but doesn't really hold for these purposes (except to the excessively parochial, granted).

True enough, but doesn't really hold for these purposes (except to the excessively parochial, granted). It obviously mattered at the selection meeting, if the accounts are correct. It will also be interesting to understand why a candidate could be shortlisted for Middlesbrough, but not shortlisted for his home seat.

I don't really think that should be a problem, as long as the ink isn't still wet on her application form.

It will also be interesting to understand why a candidate could be shortlisted for Middlesbrough, but not shortlisted for his home seat I think we have a good idea why it happened in Middlesbrough, tbh Anyway, horses for courses. The desire for a clean break in this instance is surely understandable, even if it has been less than perfectly executed
