I would be surprised if they dont go for Nov 29th with the other two. I'm told it depends if we think we can organize enough volunteers (& organize the campaign) quickly enough to the satisfaction of the leadership. My opinion is that it would be a mistake to wait too long as we could capitalize on the successful results (potentially) in the other three by-elections for the 'big-mo'. Plus it's harder for opposition parties to organize in safe seats held by us as we have more volunteers & it's generally in areas surrounded by other 'safe' seats with more activists that can be mobilized. Cutting it that tight would mean calling it this week. Would do wonders for Labour, would mean a very small ballot paper.

It is widely expected (though not yet totally confirmed) that both Croydon N and Middlesbrough will be on Nov 29.
Though I wonder if they could be "moved back" a week, to fit in Rotherham more easily as well??

I think the LibDems held the old Rotherham Central ward for a while in the 1980s/90s - but it was very much a "one man band" and crumbled to dust afterwards.......
(shades of Tameside, perhaps??)

Both UKIP and BNP can poll more votes than the LDs IMO. I think that's highly possible. This is a real dead zone for the LibDems - for quite a long time it was the only council in Yorkshire without a LibDem councillor and I don't think the LD's or their predecessors have ever had a councillor here since reorganisation in 1974. If the LDs are looking for something positive they'll probably do slightly better than Barnsley Central where they came sixth with 4.2%.

I don't think there'd be that much difference between Nov 29th and Dec 6th in terms of suitability - both will have limited hours of daylight.
Mind you, I can't say that I see the harm in leaving it until after Christmas. The chances of somebody stealing a march on us here are not great and campaigning over the Christmas period is difficult anyway.

If the boundary changes happen/unicorns fly over rainbows, Rotherham would be altered at the next election (or, I guess, the 2020 election)
Rotherham North takes the Valley and Wingfield wards from the current seat (the former which seems to incorporate a distinctly Rotherham part of the town itself) and adds it to Rawmarsh, Swinton and Wath(-upon-Dearne).
Rotherham and Sheffield East takes the rest of the constituency, from what I can gather, and adds Darnall, Shiregreen/Brightside. This would be the natural successor to Rotherham as currently formed
I don't know Sheffield very well, but the Darnall ward seems to go very close to - if not straight into - Sheffield city centre.

I wonder if that independent chap will be standing again. He managed a couple of thousand votes in 2010.

Labour selection timetable: Application to be sent by Friday Shortlisting on Monday Selection on Tuesday
I would guess such a tight timetable will probably favour someone already known among the membership. Or you need a really strong performance at the hustings. Other than Cllr Hussain and Cllr Hoddinott, another local name suggested is Cllr Rushfort (who is also the daugher of Kevin Barron MP).
BBC's James Vincent thinks the writ will be moved tomorrow in time for a 29 Nov contest

There are rumours that Yvonne Ridley (see Leicester South) is going to stand for Respect.

Rotherham Politics may be a place for news on this by-election, if you can read past the invective. According to that site, the Tory candidate is Jackie Whiteley (a familiar name in Yorkshire by-elections -- she was the Tory candidate in Bradford West) and the UKIP candidate is one Caven Vines. Both of them stood in this seat in 2010.

Let's face it EAL.....You could put Denis McShane back up as the candidate and you would still win by a landslide. They could probably have put up Dennis Neilson and won!

Apart from that website, there’s no source anywhere suggesting the Conservatives have selected either and picking a candidate who fought a Bratfud seat eight months ago doesn't sound best practice anyway. Sounds wishful thinking.
