I see Ladbrokes have now changed the bet on John to getting more or less than 120 votes, still at 5/6 a pop.

Back to the present day, for a moment - Lee Jasper is apparently trading quite shamelessly on his Livingstone connections in his early campaigning Which has led to calls for the former Mayor to come to Croydon and publicly campaign for the Labour candidate once they are selected in a few days. He has apparently said he would be happy to do so...... He has come /photo/1

The most interesting thing about this by-election I think is what happens to the Tory vote. It's difficult to predict whether it'll hold up reasonably well or collapse quite badly. I think it will hold up reasonably well. Andy Stranack is a good local candidate and seems to come across to everybody as a nice man.

Were you not invited to particpate?

Were you not invited to particpate? I was invited to be in the audience at the meeting (as were all the other candidates); we were sent the list of questions in advance and all of our answers will be published in full on the website. Only the six main candidates were on the panel because there just wouldn't have been enough space for all 12 candidates on stage, or enough time for proper answers.

But surely you are one of the six main candidates, if not the main candidate?

But surely you are one of the six main candidates, if not the main candidate? Obviously I'm the main candidate, because I'm going to win. The question is about which of the six realistic possibilities will come 2nd.

The leaflet from the "nine eleven was an inside job" candidate doesn't mention anything about 9/11.

Well, that's sort of like how the Green Party kept pushing us to avoid mentioning broad environmental issues on leaflets, for fear of being typecast.

Perhaps it would be appropriate and apposite if this bloke put broad environmental issues in his leaflets while the Greens could fill their leaflets with trooferism.

I don't see why Lee Jasper is considered one of the main six candidates. Respect has no track record in this constituency and in gthe recent by-election in Manchester they came behind the Pirate party. They hardly have any councillors now - they are not a major-minor party like the greens or UKIP

I have seen it claimed that Respect are "second favourites" with at least one bookie. To put that into perspective, though, Labour are about 50 to 1 ON

To put that into perspective, though, Labour are about 50 to 1 ON Current Ladbroke's odds for here, Rotherham and MiddlesbroughLab 1/33 Respect 14/1 UKIP 25/1 Con 33/1 ... OMRLP 500/1 ... It's always worth taking this sort of thing with a pinch of salt, though: the people placing the bets which are driving the odds may not know much about what's really going on.

Another hustings meeting - this time with 10 of the 12 candidates. Only the NF and CPB candidates weren't there, but I don't think they were explicitly excluded. Lively debate albeit with a slightly kerfufflious order of questions and answers. Big round of applause for my suggestion that new housing should be built on golf-courses.

They hardly have any councillors now - they are not a major-minor party like the greens or UKIP I guess somebody could make the argument that along with Labour and Sinn Fein they are one of only three parties to have won a parliamentary by-election this parliament. They might finish in the top 6 in Croydon, they might not. Difficult to say (or care) really.
