Are there police commissioner elections in London? No. Mayor and GLA carry out these functions.

Because it is a death it could have been moved in recess unlike Corby.

If the by-election is going to be on 15th November then labour will have to move quickly on both moving the writ and candidate selection. Unless they do this then it may be as late as January or February before the election happens.
The election will be a shoo-in for labour whatever time it happens. This ain't going to be a Bradford West.

I presume our resident Croydon Loony is a likely candidate. You never know, his local profile could lead to a Galloway-esque shocker...

Can't see the top 3 changing places here and can't see anybody else saving their deposit.

I was shocked when I heard of the death of Malcolm Wicks, whom I knew fairly well and whom I met lots of times. He was a gentle, courteous man who served Croydon well and rose above the ideological turmoils and spin of the "New Labour" era. I remember that he joined in with me, Greens and Lib Dems to campaign for a "Yes" vote in the AV referendum last year; in my book that proves that he's a good egg and that he didn't let his huge majority under FPTP go to his head.
I was out at a concert on Saturday night and I didn't hear the news until about 2am, so i am not sure when the news broke. I had known for a long time that he was ill with cancer, but as far as I knew he was responding well to treatment and I had no reason to suspect that it was terminal.
As far as the by-election is concerned, I am still in a bit of shock and it is too early for me to consider properly whether I want to stand as a candidate. If there is an OMRLP candidate then it would be me (because Alan Hope will be standing in Manchester Central) but whether I will want to stand at all is by no means certain.

Would it be in Labour's interest to call this for the 1st or 8th of November (as there are no Police elections to get in the way in London), win big and then build some momentum for the P&CC Elections (and presumably the other three GB by elections) on 15th November?

TUSC to stand. No candidate confirmed as yet. I would be surprised if this ended up on 15th November now.

Can't see the top 3 changing places here and can't see anybody else saving their deposit. I think it's possible the LDs could lose their deposit and the Greens might have a chance of overtaking them.

While the LDs may well drop significantly, I don't think this is the sort of constituency that is likely to see much of an increase in the Green vote.

Well, looking at the constituency vote for the London Assembly in the Croydon North wards, the Greens did beat the LDs in every ward, but the LDs would still just have saved their deposit: Lab 16031 (62.8%) Con 5090 (19.9) Grn 1807 (7.1) LD 1327 (5.2) UKIP 1280 (5.0) However, for a parliamentary by-election, I'd expect the LDs to do a bit better and the Greens a bit worse. UKIP I'm not sure about.

UKIP I'm not sure about. The by-election result could be very similar to those numbers. Maybe the Greens 200 votes less and the LDs 200 more.

I understand that the Christian People's Alliance are planning to stand with candidate selection this coming weekend.
