Barry McElduff reported to have resigned* in the fallout from his Kingsmill stunt.
* He cannot resign in form so will have to apply to be Crown Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds.

Probably, but in the end the officials simply said to Gerry Adams "the job's yours whether you want it or not" and appointed him anyway as Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead. Which is a suburb of Scarborough, and nowhere near the Chiltern Hills.
SF hold, in all probability, but how hard will the other parties try here?

In the case of Adams I think he was canny enough to realise it was better to not be blocked by an Irish court and take a "appointed against my will" approach but even subsequent resignations technically made it an impasse.

When David Davis resigned almost ten years ago, he was appointed then immediately released from the 'duties'/office.
I don't recall Zac doing the same in 2016, nor the two SF MPs who resigned in 2013 requesting to be released.
Surely it would be possible for McElduff to hold the position for a few minutes/seconds as a means to an end?

David Davis did not need to resign as Steward. It is only the appointment not the holding which disqualifies an MP. Historically many MPs were appointed to posts, automatically vacated their seats and were re-elected to carry on on their post.

The SDLP have never won this seat and have always underperformed. They were probably the favourites going into the 1997 election, but couldn't get the Shinner vote to back them tactically and ended up letting the Ulster Unionists in. |

The SDLP have never won this seat and have always underperformed. They were probably the favourites going into the 1997 election, but couldn't get the Shinner vote to back them tactically and ended up letting the Ulster Unionists in. Hmm, UUP comeback then? I'd love to suggest APNI coming through the middle, but I don't think they make many waves in that part of the province. |

The UUP did stand in 2017 but only just saved their deposit, and with Arlene Foster having constituency sensitivity to the issues that animate unionists West of the Bann, I wouldn't give much for the chances of dislodging the DUP in West Tyrone. Note that Sinn Féin got more than 50% of the vote in 2017 anyway, so even a Unionist unity candidate is going to struggle. |

Alliance appear to have had their best result in the history of the constituency in last year's Assembly election. But it's still below 3%.

It's about time the parliamentary authorities stopped this nonesense about MPS only being able to resign through appointment to a fictional office. You can resign from the Lords but not from the Commons - pure idoicy |
