well who can tell who anyone would be like once elected. However she has been a walking disaster and clearly not a politician at all and not able to understand what it was to be an MP.

Who was the last person who, having made a successful career elsewere, became a successful MP? I can well imagine that Louise Mensch received a lot of hostility from her colleagues - I daresay not a few of them thought she needed taking down a peg or two.

Glenda Jackson has largely managed to get past her celebrity background. Had she been a bit younger in the Blair/Brown period, she might have had a longer frontbench career.

Most MPs are people who have made a successful career elsewhere before their election to Parliament. Some were very successful coalminers, for instance. I guess Innocentabroad's question really referred to those who had a successful career which came to public attention.

But the real point, perhaps, is that she had a long history of political activism alongside her better known activities.

Nothing deliberate, if there are posts missing from here, I probably botched something while moving the threads around...

Louise Mensch has replaced Toby Young as The Sun on Sunday's star columnist.

Last year Louise Mensch claimed the next Tory leadership contest would be between Boris Johnson (who isn't an MP) and Michael Gove (who has repeatedly ruled himself out). Her value as a political columnist seems to be limited.
