Anybody else been listening to Shapps ravings?? Totally failed to answer the question about union ballots. Disappointed he wasn't pressed on that, because the answer would be interesting. His claim that the local by-elections saw a 1% swing to Labour on average also deserves scrutiny. I suspect that takes no account of when the last election was, so it belongs in Amazing Stupidity and Ignorance.

Maybe the gap between UKIP and Tory will be smaller than that between Tory and Labour.

Apparrently there's a limited recount to see if the LDs will keep their deposit.

Apparrently there's a limited recount to see if the LDs will keep their deposit. That probably means they have lost it... Some rumours saying they're 9 votes below the 5% threshold.

I know they're not exactly rolling in cash, but calling for two recounts to save a deposit is just pathetic on every level.

Reminds me somewhat of their behaviour at the Hodge Hill count in 2004 - though at least that one was for the actual winner.......

The next time the LDs get 5.1% in an election, the returning officer should order two recounts just to make absolutely sure they have saved their deposit!

I know they're not exactly rolling in cash, but calling for two recounts to save a deposit is just pathetic on every level. I wonder if the candidate had to pay her own deposit? That might explain why they were so desperate to hold on to it. Unlikely for a by-election, I would have thought. But Corby isn't the richest of local parties.

I know they're not exactly rolling in cash, but calling for two recounts to save a deposit is just pathetic on every level. £500 might only be an average evening's drinking for a local Tory party (or Labour's celebration tonight) but's it's a hell of a lot of money for any local Lib Dem party - it will take two or three quiz nights to raise that - so an effort to save it has to be made. Having said that, it must be rare to have two recounts for a deposit.

That might explain why they were so desperate to hold on to it. Could be. Candidates are often asked to pay their own deposit in non-target seats.

LDs lost their deposit with 4.96%. Total valid votes were 35,665 so 1,784 votes were needed to save a deposit, so they were 14 votes short.

Even the new MP is using the "Corby and East Northamptonshire" formulation, I see ;D
