This is also good for Labour's chances in the other byelections on 15 November - Corby will get all the media attention rather than Cardiff South or Manchester Central. Cardiff South hasn't acrtually been called for 15th Nov yet has it? Nothing has or could be. None of the MPs has actually given up their seat yet.

The woman is a joke and so is the A-list she represents. They deprived some decent candidate of a chance in Corby to parachute this woman in and now its just about certain to be delivered back to Labour and yet it is clear from Cameron's letter he liked her a lot and she was appearing to be headed for a promotion. Or maybe a safe 'offer' to make ......

of course speculation that Johnson will stand here, can not see that at all, away fgrom London, in a marginal with a good local Labouyr candidate.
No chance he would risk a defeat there.

She was in the job for just over 2 years ...... so, been there, done that, time to move on .... According to Wikipedia she was placed on the A-list in 2006 which means she spent about twice as long on it as she did as an MP: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louise_MenschGetting a 2.5% swing doesn't indicate a massive amount of work as a candidate ......

I cannot believe the sheer lack of loyalty from this woman. She gets a very winnable seat, wins it (on a fairly low swing) and now can't be arsed to do the job? Unbelievable. it needs a swing against us of only 1.75% - on that basis alone one would expect her to stay the course.

This has to represent a serious blow to Cameron's strategy of getting more people like Louise Mensch into parliament. From now on Tory associations will use her as an example of why they should choose their own candidates without any interference from Central Office.

There is also the small fact he repeatedly promised to serve a full term as Mayor if re-elected. Going for a Westminster seat at the 2015 GE would be one thing, jacking in his second term just six months in quite another. Even our sycophantic media might have something to say about that.......

UKIP didn't stand last time. They might have an outside chance of beating the LDs if they do this time since the East Northamptonshire area must harbour quite a few potential UKIP supporters.

From now on Tory associations will use her as an example of why they should choose their own candidates without any interference from Central Office. It does highlight a pitfall of selecting 'celebrity' candidates. A lot of them, once elected, may find the routine of constituency work and being a backbench MP boring - and they don't really need the money either so there's no incentive to stick around. The implication of her exchange of letters with the PM is that it's something up with her family life, rather than she's just got a bit bored with being an MP as commenters here are stating. I'm inclined to take this at face value, even though of course most MPs structure their family life such that it doesn't affect their work as an MP and vice versa (or, alternatively, let their marriages fall apart).

A large proportion of the population of Corby are Scottish or of Scottish descent (large numbers moved from Strathclyde in the 30s to work int he Steel industry and more subsequently). Corby borough had something like 18% Scottish born according to 2001 census. Arthur was joking, but there may actually be something in the fact that labour holding up somewhat better here than other neighbouring seats had to do with the Scottish vote remaining better for Labour as in other areas (such as Scotland)

Corby town itself is widely known as a bit of Caledonia in exile. It is even rumoured the Nats have considered standing there in the past

If 18% are actually Scottish-born, how many are of Scottish background? I think Corby has the largest Rangers supporters' club outside Scotland and NI.

A question I've never been able to find the answer to is whether or not people in Corby still speak with a Scottish accent. Maybe I'll finally find out now with the by-election coming up.
