I was intrigued by "Democracy 2015" and googled them. According to the independent voices section of The Independent's website, they are a "nascent political movement" started by one of the founders of The Independent, Andreas Whittham Smith. It has a series of articles by them, almost all of which were written by one Andreas Whittham Smith. They haven't made it clear whether they want democracy by 2015, to end democracy by 2015 or democracy only in 2015.
They believe in: "honesty", "listening", "public service", kittens, motherhood and apple pie.

David BISHOP (Elvis Loves Pets) Christine EMMETT (Conservative) Ian GILLMAN (Independent) Jill HOPE (Liberal Democrat) Jonathan HORNETT (Green) Rohen KAPUR (Young People's Party) Adam LOTUN (Democracy 2015) Mr MOZZARELLA (Independent) Margot PARKER (UKIP) Peter REYNOLDS (Cannabis Law Reform) Gordon RIDDELL (British National Party) Andy SAWFORD (Labour) Chris SCOTTON (United People's) David WICKHAM (English Democrats) Oh! Not Toby JUG (OMRLP)? He is one of our most enthusiastic members, so I'm very surprised that he's not standing. I had to check to make sure - www.east-northamptonshire.gov.uk/downloads/SOPN_Corby.pdf

Adam Lotun has been formally endorsed by TUSC also. Democracy 2015 smacks very much of the 'Jury Team'.

On the issue of how many candidates should there be, I tend to take the view that this is about right:
1) Labour (with or without Co-op) 2) Conservative 3) Liberal Democrat (or I guess a Liberal) 3) Green 4) UKIP 5) A representative of the Far Left 6) A representative of the Far Right 7) Nationalist (if applicable) 8) Monster Raving Loonie (or clear joke candidate) 9) (Sane) Independent
That pretty much covers all bases, except I guess the Christians, which gives everyone who goes to the polls someone to vote for. So nine candidates on a FPTP- manageable. Any more than that and I think you're taking the piss, but of course the Government shouldn't stop people running.

I'm more interested in who Mr Mozzarella is. He's a deadly serious candidate who will have Andy Sawford quaking in his boots. I don't have a problem with 14 candidates in a by-election. If we were getting 14 candidates, including two joke candidates, in a typical seat in a General Election I might think that the number of signatures needed should be increased, but that isn't the case. I find the number of unopposed returns in local elections in some areas more concerning.

They actually do look like a good laugh, which is something that has been missing from the big-L and small-l loony parties alike lately. And who doesn't like takeaway? ;D

My Mp tells me that during his several canvassing visits here the Labour vote is 'doing very well' in the Corby town which is reliably Labour but he feels that the surrounding East Nothamptonshire countryside is just the opposite & is stubbornly (he said bloody mindedly) staying Tory. He says Ashworth's polling is just wrong & the majority will be quote 'small' (I disagree) & that the result very much depends on turnout.

That has expectation management written all the way through it.

Maybe so, but I've been told similarly by party staffers. So if it is expectation management, it's not just for the general public.
Haven't been over there myself, might or might not take a succession of buses to get there in the next week or so.

It's not expectation management it's what he told me we were chatting I am his agent so we chat. Mainly about canvassing & boundaries as I coordinated our constituencies response & appeared for him at the public enquiry. My predictions are better than his although I overestimated his majority in 2010 so I'm not always right! But I think the Labour majority should be around 6500. I hope he's wrong.

Spent some time in Corby today visited Weldon you would not even know there was an election on. I saw 1 Labour leaflet in window and a few tory placards in fields. Labour were out but saw nobody else. Hear UKIP are working really hard and feeling is they will do well. November by elections never inspiring to Joe Public nor political activists

Has anyone thought it odd how little coverage this by-election campaign is getting, even though it's the first by-election in a Government-held seat since the last General Election? A cynical person would say that our media has been a little US obsessed

Has anyone thought it odd how little coverage this by-election campaign is getting, even though it's the first by-election in a Government-held seat since the last General Election? If the Tories were defending a majority between 5 and 10,000 I think there'd be a lot of interest in the by-election.
