Do you see Clegg as Napoleon or Hitler in this scenario? Oh, definitely Napoleon. Well meaning in many ways but suffering from delusions of grandeur Many of his troops are still on the long retreat, harried by Cossacks.....

Local press and the Green Party are quoting some daft stats about this election. From the press it’s lazy.
The Isle of Wight free press says the Tory vote has been ‘ slashed by just under half’ - of course it would be reduced as the last election was on General Election Day 2015.
Isle of Wight Green Party spokeswoman, Vix Lowthion, said: "Central Wight was the safest Conservative seat on the whole Isle of Wight Council — no longer. Last night saw their vote almost halve. "Island Conservatives must surely be asking themselves why they have lost the confidence of so many Island residents.”
The Conservatives got 547 votes, compared to 1026 last time, a retention rate of 53%, the Greens got 143 votes, compared to 258 last time, a retention rate of 55%. I trust the Green Party are asking themselves the same question

However, unlike the Greens, the local Tories can comfort themselves on having won... The results in this ward really are an indictment of the LDs 2010-15; we went from a strong second to not even putting up a candidate, then we finally get round to standing we get a decent 26%. Congrats tio the local party and candidate, I hope this is taken as a sign that the IoW generally is ripe for a revival of what was once an area of strength.

People really are getting a bit overexcited by this terribly boring result.

People really are getting a bit overexcited by this terribly boring result. As said by every party which has ever held a seat with a reduced majority ... I'd say it was slightly disappointing for the Tories; good for the Lib Dems; terrible for the Greens. But in the great scheme of things - one byelection, in an untypical area, in January, etc etc

But for us LDs any sign that we can recover voters who used to turn out but were lost in the Coalition era is naturally exciting and I think so long as it doesn't lead to ramping its valid to look hard at it and try to work out if it can be replicated (and how much). The parochialism of IoW politics has been noted and that limits the applicability of this elsewhere - except that some of our other strongholds also had that feature. The Cornwall ward next week will be one to watch for me.

You did respectably well and should be fairly pleased, but it’s not exactly a thriller.
