This isn't quite a defection but Conservative Cllr's Adrian Naylor and Chris Greaves have both formed a new group called 'The Independents' on Bradford Council. Cllr Naylor is defending his seat in May in Craven whilst Cllr Greaves is next up in 2014 in Wharfedale. Both of which are safe Tory seats. Remains to be seen whether or not more councillors follow suit.

can you join UKIP and post date the application? It's more that some people want to join UKIP and backdate it to 1 January 1973.

Actually, I think it's more that they want to post-date reality to 1973.

I'm assuming he's the indy who was elected as a Conservative, rather than the one who was elected as Labour?

According to today's Herald, she now hasn't defected to Glasgow First and even turned up at a Labour Group meeting. This seems to have been a surprise to both parties. She's not a candidate in Canal anyway.

A Libdem councillor has apparently defected to Labour in Sutton BC - meaning it is no longer a Labour free zone

I expect that he will not have the courage to offer himself to the voters under his new colours although it seems that some parts of London Labour think that that is what the voters should get . Ali Hai Councillor for Goodmayes ward on Redbridge LBC has resigned from the Labour party . Labour group leader said " The residents of Goodmayes picked 3 Labour councillors to represent them and I hope Cllr Hai will do the decent thing and get a fresh mandate as to whether they want an Independent representing them . "

apparently due to a waste incinerator issue The incinerator is a huge issue in Croydon at the moment. There is a proposal to build an incinerator in Sutton (very close to the border with Croydon) to burn waste to make energy. The three Conservative councillors in Waddon ward (the nearest bit of Croydon to where the incinerator will be) promised at the 2010 election to oppose it. Now, Croydon Council has voted to approve it - and all 3 Waddon councillors voted in favour. They are now trying to pretend that: (a) it's a different type of incinerator (not quite as bad in how it pollutes) from the sort they promised to oppose; (b) it's actually closer to Broad Green ward, and therefore doesn't matter. It just so happens that Waddon is the crucial marginal ward which determines which party has overall control of Croydon Council. If the issue is still significant in two years' time, the Conservative Party could lose control of Croydon Council because of this one issue alone. All it takes is a few hundred Conservative voters in Waddon to switch to Labour or Green, and Labour would get back in power again - even if all other wards vote the same way as in 2010.
