It perhaps tells you something of a man's character that his choice of birthday treat is to go on to a web discussion forum and indulge in one of the most pathetic acts of trolling.
It is quite something else when such a person has seriously been put forward by the political party to which they belong as having the integrity to become a Member of Parliament.

Stepney, I'm afraid I am with DBIV (as he previously was) on this one. The "Blacketer" gags are childish, unfunny - and above all, VERY VERY OLD. Without judging on this particular dispute, most of us have done something we are not proud of in retrospect. Just let it drop, shall we?? ` I would exalt you if you had it switched on. As it is I will merely add to the cross party consensus.

I do find it ironic that it's a standing joke here that I have sockpuppets and yet no evidence has ever been offered. It was only when all the Sam stuff broke that I first heard of the term sockpuppet. Before that I would have guessed the word was slang for a rubber johnny.
Oh, and the new member is nothing to do with me before anyone asks!

Oh, and the new member is nothing to do with me before anyone asks! The difference is that with you it is clearly a joke and if you asked everyone to stop they probably would. The normal defence is that David is being oversensitive but: a) I wouldn't imagine it was the most fun time in his life so to be reminded of it is probably unpleasant b) The attacks go beyond joking and into bullying The new member is being a dick, he isn't funny and he is a good deal less of a contributor to the site than David who doesn't really need me to defend him but I will anyway despite our previous runins because it isn't about him, it's about encouraging people not to be complete a-holes on the internet.

And particularly not on this particular thread, which has an actual defined function.
It shouldn't have to be pointed out that this function is not trolling.

Well, you live in West Ham, one of the safest Labour seats in the country. I imagine the malevolent PC bug has even infected the Conservative Association there. This was not in West Ham. That said the current chair-whatever of the West Ham CA is mainly of the view that any of the terms is okay. If you want a malevolent PC bug ridden Conservative Association you'll have to look elsewhere. There's a certain one in north London that has been particularly prominent in the past. Tottenham I presume and the absurd Justin Hinchcliffe (while on the subject of internet trolls we hoped not to hear from again)

I would like to request that the trolling goes to PMs. It just annoys the rest of us. The incident was a while ago. Alternatively create a thread which the rest of us can ignore.

... she looked the type who didn't appreciate the term 'Chairman', but tough, because it's the correct one. Normal practice* is to refer to the person in the Chair as "Chair", "Chairman", Chairwoman", "Madam Chairman", "Chairperson", or whatever else, according to what the person him/herself prefers. Anything else is self-indulgent, degenerate, bourgeois, reactionary. * according to what my MP said about 9 hours ago

I also have no Idea what all this fuss is about, but am pleased to see Kris has taken action. Now, anybody got any real defections?

Yes - that's a genuine bona fide defection conservative to Ind. Have an exalt for getting us back on topic!

The guy is an idiot if he did indeed do that, but two things concern me more.
1. What on earth is any council doing wasting time in passing motions on marriage or any other issue which is outside of their remit?
2. Have the police not got better things to do than spend time and money investigating the identity of a moron who left a stupid message on someone's answerphone?

Performing Marriages (and civil partnerships) is in a councils remit. 2. My doubts are more in the region of sentencing policy these days.

My beef is not the issue but councils spending time on issues which are nothing to do with them. If the phone message contained something like "I'm going to hunt you down and kill you" then that should warrant police interest, but not a silly message hoping that someone becomes ill.

1 . Anyone can raise a motion on the council floor 2. If some complaisn the police shoudl spend time investigating, are you suggesting they should ignore it ? I answered your first point in my reply to Iain. I'd say anyone who complained about that is a plonka. If it were persistant that would be different. If I were complained to about it, the first thing I would ask is was a threat made. Where is the line drawn? "Hope you get struck by lighting" "Hope you catch malaria". Even the homophobic/hate-crime angle is dubious as HIV/Aids can affect anyone and the guy is apparently bisexual and not gay. Don't get me wrong, the guy who did it is bang out of order but I encounter worse insults on a weekly basis and just shrug it off.
