That is a pretty impressive gain. Notionally it must be mainly swing from UKIP, but God knows what actually happened. I don't think you can avoid the conclusion that an awful lot of UKIP voters were happy to vote Lib Dem this time. Local elections are not about Brexit... The rather a-political protest vote just changed dustbins! That is all.

Wandsworth result increases the likelihood that there are some voters in the borough who switched to Labour in the General election over the EU or other issues, but are quite happy with their Conservative council. I suspect that the Tory administration in Wandsworth will be hard to shift. There was a swing to Labour of 5% in that by-election - if you apply that to the 2014 local election result, what would the composition of the council look like? Something like Con: 36 Lab: 24. Labour would gain the 3 split wards but nothing else.

On the canvassing issue ...
If you don't speak to the person by name how do you know they're not a visitor, childminder, tradesman, burglar or new resident?

I am also dyslexic People will usually say 'I don't live here' if they aren't the residents of the home.

I was told that the new data protection regulations will require all canvassing information to be associated with the correct person for certain.. (i.e. no asking how other people in the household vote). Anyone else heard that?
