Why was a second round needed when he had a majority? He was 7 votes short in round 1 325+162+133+42=662/2=331+1=332 needed Apologies I read that as 335

By De Hondt, it should be 4 EPP, 3 S&D, 2 Renew, 2 Greens, 1 ID, 1 ECR and 1 GUE. Let's see
Kolaja was supposed to be nominated for the Quaestor position.

Katarina Barley would have been a better pick than Rosie von der Leyen.

One MEP asks for a technical break of 10 minutes. Sassoli gives a 5 minutes break

The SPD objection to von der Leyen demonstrates the biggest problem she has- that she really isn't popular in Germany. She was once the heir to Merkel, and her career faltered, especially as she carried on pissing off the Bundeswehr. From what I've seen, Germans aren't that keen on her becoming Commission President even though she is German, because they just do not rate her.

LatviaLatvia gets 8 MEPs regardless of Brexit 2014 Results: Unity | (EPP) | 46.2% | 4 seats | National Alliance (NA) | (ECR) | 14.3% | 1 seat | Harmony (SDPS - Social Demcratic Party) | (S&D) | 13.0% | 1 seat | ZZS (Union of Greens and Farmers) | * | 8.3% | 1 seat | LKS (Lativian Russian Union) | (G-EFA) | 6.4% | 1 seat |
* The Latvian Greens who form part of ZZS are members of European Green Party, however the elected MEP initially sat with EFDD, before going independent and then joining ALDE. New Unity's poll ratings have tumbled, with most polls indicating they would only hold 1 seat. In fact the most recent poll suggest that the 8 seats will be split between 8 parties. The most likely to get a second seat would be Harmony, although latest poll has them behind NA. All 3 of these look practically guaranteed to get at least 1 though. Also looking sure of 1 seat are JKP (New Conservative Party - pro-European liberal Conservative) and AP! (Development/For! - an alliance of 3 liberal parties). ZZS are roughly level with 5 years ago and should hold their seat. The remaining 1 or 2 seats appear to be between LKS, LRA (Latvian Association of Regions - regionalists neither particularly left or right (I did initially write centrist regionalists, but found that a bit too oxymoronic)) and The Progressives. LKS look the most likely to miss out and the progressives the most likely to get in, but will depend which polls turn out to be most accurate. 2019 Results:New Unity | (EPP) | 26.2% | -20.0% | 2 seats | -2 | Harmony | (S&D) | 17.5% | +4.4% | 2 seats | +1 | National Alliance | (ECR) | 16.4% | +2.2% | 2 seats | +1 | AP! | (Renew) | 12.3% | new | 1 seat | +1 | LKS | (G-EFA) | 6.2% | -0.1% | 1 seat | nc |
So the top 3 all did well enough to hold 2 seats. although it was still a pretty disastrous election for Unity, they still came comfortably top and held up slightly better than expected. Harmony and NA largely matched their polling, but gained an additional seat through the under-performance of many smaller parties. ZZS finished with 5.3%, JKP with 4.4%; LRA with 5.0% and the Progressives with just 2.9%

SloveniaSlovenia will also elect 8 MEPs regardless of Brexit 2014 Results: SDS (Slovenian Democratic Party) | (EPP) | 24.8% | 3 seats | SLS (Slovenian People's Party)/NSi (New Slovenia - Christian Democrats) | (EPP) | 16.6% | 2 seats | Dr Igor Soltes | (G-EFA) | 10.3% | 1 seat | DeSUS (Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia) | (ALDE) | 8.1% | 1 seat | SD (Social Democrats) | (S&D) | 8.1% | 1 seat |
This time SDS and SLS are running a joint list. Dr Igor Soltes (G-EFA) who formed his own, unsuccessful micro-party after the 2014 elections, appears at the top of the DeSUS list, but I'm unclear if he has joined or if this is an electoral alliance. New players of LMS (List of Marjan Sarec (ALDE); Sarec is the Slovenian Prime Minister ). The polling is a bit all over the place - the last 3 polls have had LMS on 31.4%, 9.7% and 16.5% (although the last two had huge undecided figures). LMS and SDS/SLS seem like getting at least 2 apiece, with SD getting at least one. Any but probably not all could get an extra seat. The other parties in contention for a seat are DeSUS (who looked out of it, but one recent poll has them back up to levels of holding their seat); NSi and Levica (The Left (GUE-NGL)). One poll also suggested SNS (Slovenian Nationalist Party) might get a seat, but that looks less likely. And the end is almost in sight now... 2019 Results:SDS/SLS | (EPP) | 26.4% | * | 3 seats | -1 | SD | (S&D) | 18.6% | +9.6% | 2 seats | +1 | LMS | (Renew) | 15.6% | new | 2 seats | +2 | NSi | (EPP) | 11.1% | * | 1 seat | nc |
| | | | | |
*Change difficult to work out - SDS/SLS slightly up on SDS' 2014 vote share, but well down on combined SDS, SLS NSI vote share. NSi vote share down on SLS/NSI combined share last time. Overall the 3 EPP parties are abot 4% down. The Social Democrats did a bit better than expected, although not totally surprising. NSi claimed the last seat quite comfortably with Levica getting 6.3%; DeSuS/Dr Soltes falling to 5.7% and the Nationalists 4.0% just behind the List of Alenka Bratusek (Renew) also 4.0%.

Nominations for top jobs Eu Commission President: Ursula von der Leyen (Germany, CDU) European Central Bank: Christine Lagarde EU Council: Charles Michel (Belgium, Liberals) High Representatives for Foreign Affairs: Josep Borell (Spain, Socialists) Since these nominations were made by the Council as a package if UvdL's candidacy is torpedoed on Tuesday by the EP could that lead to the rest of the package being altered. Michel has already been confirmed but Lagarde and Borell haven't. Neither of them are exactly controversy free nominations. I wonder if they'll be sacrificed as part of a new package deal Michel seems a decent bloke and quite savvy. Lagarde...I rate her competence but I'm not too sure about her agenda. Why anyone would want to die in a ditch for that crook Borrell is beyond me.
