Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that the Gainsborough Conservative Association's twitter handle is @conservgains.

I've been searching for any confirmation the count is tonight. It's an urban ward but in a mostly rural (and quite small) authority.

God that fallowfield result is an argument for compulsory voting! The ward has some very large Manchester University halls of residence in it. Manchester's academic year ended weeks ago.

Fallowfield is an old haunt of mine and I drove through it yesterday. I saw absolutely no sign of any election taking place.

God that fallowfield result is an argument for compulsory voting! Kid, I mean this kindly - you know nowt. It is July 27th, the students have gone away, people are on their summer holidays, parents are trying to entertain their children, and the people of Fallowfield have been on a constant election footing since before the death of Sir Gerald...I would be so sick of election campaigners by now that I would have been tempted to go for a day out instead.

And it's not exactly a marginal and all but one other councillor on the council is Labour.

Con hold in Blandford, by 3 votes over Labour (!). Would be a Conservative gain from Independent if that were the case. Away all day, back this evening.

Unconfirmed but reported as Conservative GAIN from Independent in North Dorset DC, Blandford Central Conservatives 310 Labour 307 LD Hugo Mieville 229 Turnout: 25% If true, this is a great result for Labour and upholds the Electoral Calculus guess for this ward at the General Election which put Labour at second p!ace with 28.7% of the vote behind the Tories on 42.4, the Lib Dems on 25.04%, with the Greens trailing on 3.86%. If Labour are putting in the work in wards like this, it makes politics interesting in this part of South West, confirming Labour's move ahead of the Lib Dems in constituencies like North Dorset.

Wait so it's OK not to vote if you live in a safe area or are a student... It's the principle dam it No, it isn't OK, but one needs to have the context for the turnout in mind. Unlike many, I have sympathy with the concept of compulsory voting, but sometimes we need to remember that their can be compelling reasons why the electors reject the opportunity to use their vote, and the lack of any proper campaigning in the ward after the by-election campaign turned i to a general election campaign probably reflects the exhaustion of all those involved here. Not just the students are away, so are many others after the schools shut last week. Even with my sympathy for compulsory voting for Westminster elections, I am not sure that it would make sense in a local bye!ection.

Could be said Fallowfield is a big argument against compulsory voting. Labour would have won the seat just as comfortably if all the registered electorate had been required to vote. As it was, only one in ten of them needed to take the time out of their busy lives to cast ballots, and it had the same result.

Wow, I'm astonished to see Labour so close to taking a seat in North Dorset. This really opens the door to new places where they have the potential to succeed. At this rate, they should have some representation on most of Dorset's councils in 2019.
