While that expression is appropriate in the case of resignation, etc, doesn't it feel a bit inappropriate in the case of a death in office?

For marksenior people only ever die "sadly" although no doubt some slip away quite happily.  Someone only has to mention illness or death for doktorb🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ to pipe up complaining it is in bad taste to speculate.  What else was the by-election caused by if not the death of the incumbent.

You seem to be putting me in very good company! Just feel it sounds like one is saying to the deceased lady this by-election is all your fault, which sounds a bit odd. Of course you may be saying thank you for giving all this fun of a really interesting by-election, which might be a peculiarly forum reaction.

Quoted to like it again John. We have exactly similar views on this. Whenever I read 'sadly died' from that popular Forum compound noun, 'to sadly die', I hear the plangent tones of a rich Lancastrian accent modulated to that particular and special tone of deference to death that Northern England does so very well. They like nothing better than a good death followed by a nice Ham tea.

The idea of a rich Lancastrian brings to mind the late and great Warren Clarke declaring to Blackadder;

"Mind Sir, or I shall take off my belt and by thunder, me trousers will fall down".  However, I believe the phrase has now been banned to avoid offending Lancastrians.

Yes when I saw that one I nearly asked the same, but thought leave it to Foggy, that's his area .  

" To sadly die" is a wonderful split infinitive though, and is presumably what follows after "to boldly go"

Philip Williams, author of a mammoth biography of Hugh Gaitskell, joined the SDP soon after its formation in 1981. That's the closest example I can think of.

One of the early Plaid Cymru representatives in the Welsh Assembly was called Phil Williams.

During the many years I lived in Bristol, it seemed to me that every other Lib Dem candidate seemed to be called Wright.
