I sincerely hope we see Street in situ in the WM again, or even in parliament. If he gets selected and gets in to parliament, he could be a dark horse for the LOTO post the election. Yes. Indeed, maybe the Tories sort out a safe seat from late 2024. Think Street is clearly a one nation Tory moderate - I think the Right won't be happy. I’m not sure he’d want to be an MP, but maybe just maybe waiting to see if he lost is one of the reasons that they have been delaying the Solihull selection where Julian Knight is standing down and Nicola Richards from West Bromwich has been lining herself up but Knight is said to be doing everything he can to block her.

it's pretty difficult for him to block her when he is suspended from the party unless he has some very strong allies still within it

Think it's more that he'd take the Chiltern Hundreds and cause a by-election - but he's running out of time to do that

I would hazard a guess that a straw poll in the Blue room (including former Tories) would go against him. He’s socially liberal, dismissive of culture wars, not a keen Brexiteer, interested in getting things done as opposed to posing and shouting. Pretty much exactly the kind of (lifelong) Tory that has been dropping out of the party. I wouldn’t be surprised if Labour offered him some sort of (non-partisan, technocratic) role… If I were him the very last thing I’d want to do is join some rump Tory parliamentary party in opposition. (He may have some insights into that from his partner?).

It must be uncertain whether he’d want to go to Westminster, certainly the kind of independence he’s clearly enjoyed in the mayoral role is much tougher to do in parliament

He quite possibly has parliamentary ambitions, but may be also waiting to see what happens to the Tories post-election before committing himself.

Remember who his partner is as well. He knows exactly what being a semi well known MP is like. Not all fun especially in opposition

Street is a decent guy, but while I feel for him on a personal level, I can't help thinking the Tories deserved this after axing HS2 from Birmingham to Manchester.
