The Labour expectation management yesterday, when they sounded like they were expecting to lose & even doing a bit of recrimination stuff, even fooled me. Well done those guys

Blimey. Based on the patterns from yesterday (Tories clearly got their vote out, Labour struggling slightly in Muslim-heavy areas) I thought Street would be safe as houses under FPTP, and to be honest even slightly favoured if SV had been retained. Remarkable result, whatever the final margin turns out to be.

This was a lose-lose situation for Sunak. Win it & it was because of Street's independence from the Tory brand & his record as Mayor, lose it & it was because of Sunak's unpopularity not Street's Which is probably about right. So, do the Tories go into meltdown, or just to the pub.

Rather appropriately one might say there are some cracking Holden's pubs they could drown their sorrows in, especially in the borough of Dudley

I think Street needed a very big lead in Dudley as well as Solihull. He didn't really get it.

I thought Street would win this, and my loyal Tory voting cousin who lives in Knowle assured me he would, but I am delighted to have been wrong.

Beth Rigby has just described it as a massive upset, for Labour to win a contest in the West Midlands when they are 20% ahead nationally……. It ought to be true. It's the true blue Market Hall ward in Birmingham. People who read the Birmingham Post. The Telegraph for Brummies...
