Rejoice, rejoice. Hawaii Governor David Ige has survived a strong primary challenge from Rep Colleen Hanabusa. This is the second time that the dreadful Hanabusa has given up her House seat to run statewide only to lose the Democratic primary. More depressingly DINO Ed Case has won the 1CD Primary to succeed Hanabusa in the House.

That's quite a comeback for Case.

That's quite a comeback for Case. Beaten the current Lieutenant Governor in the process. The thought has been name recognition is vital in Hawai’i and because of his near permanent campaigns over the last decade or so he’s got that in shedloads. He’s also personally wealthy and massively outspent everyone else.

A few years ago, a friend of mine interviewed for a job doing VIP stuff with a hotel chain Case was (is?) involved with: we both worked in Manila at the time which is a really long flight from Hawaii. He arrived knackered but told me he saw a politician outside at a road junction literally holding a placard with his name on and talking to queued motorists. Then he saw the same bloke walking through the hotel lobby and into the management suite which struck him as a bit odd. Apparently it was Case.

Sounds right; there’s a photograph on USA Today of him doing exactly the same roadside campaigning last Saturday.

Out of interest, what has she done to deserve that epithet?

Out of interest, what has she done to deserve that epithet? I don’t know if this is what Richard Allen had in mind, but she blotted her copybook by somewhat insensitively writing to then Governor Neil Abercrombie asking to be appointed to Daniel Inouye’s Senate seat on his death; three weeks before he died. She seems to something of an ambulance chaser as her return to Congress, having given her 2CD seat up to unsuccessfully challenge appointed Senator Brian Schatz, her return to Congress in the 1CD was in the Special Election triggered by the death of Mark Takano. She is also linked to a local property developer who is seemingly under near permanent ethical investigations either Federally or at State level.

Ha, sounds like she'd fit right in on the Rumoured and Ramped thread with that sort of attitude to politicians' death!

Wasn't it actually Inouye who asked for Hanabusa to be appointed in his death?

Wasn't it actually Inouye who asked for Hanabusa to be appointed in his death? There’s a debate about that; Inouye’s office submitted an unsigned letter purportedly from the him asking Abercrombie to appoint her, but some question the lack of a signature and whether he was lucid enough to have dictated it as the medical records indicate he’d been in an induced coma for the previous 24 hours or so. Given that Inouye’s widow did endorse the request and they were undoubtedly politically close.

There is little doubt that Inouye wanted Hanabusa to succeed him him. It had been obvious for some time that he saw her as his protege and she has essentially inherited his political machine. The problem is that while Inouye combined machine politics and a bit of racial pandering* with some fine personal qualities Hanabusa has all of his flaws and none of the redeeming qualities. In her primary contest against Schatz 4 years ago she acted with an appalling sense of entitlement seemingly believing that Inouye's wishes were paramount and that succeeding him was her right. The funny thing about her latest defeat is that she was solid favourite when she launched her primary challenge against Ige who has never been that popular and polls throughout the spring had her well ahead.
As a correction to one of Tim's earlier points. Hanabusa never represented the 2nd district, both of her stints in congress have been representing the 1st district. Ed Case however does look like he will end up having represented both as his previous congressional stint was for the 2nd and it now looks all but certain that he will represent the 1st from next January.
* Hawaiian politics has always been far more complex than many imagine and race often plays a significant role in elections.

It seems you’re right about her only representing CD1 and yet Case’s Wiki page (at least when I posted earlier) said he had lost a Primary to her in CD2 prior to the Senate imbroglio. The feeling for a few weeks has been Ige redeemed himself with his response to the recent volcanic eruption whereas Hanabusa was still campaigning on his incoming nuclear missile alert. She has also highlighted the problems of Federal representatives running for State office; she’s chosen to stay in Washington voting with the Democratic caucus thereby missing campaign events in the State, meanwhile in Minnesota, which votes on Tuesday, Tim Walz is getting criticism from both his opponents for being absent from the Washington and not voting against Trump policies, spending his time in the State campaigning instead.

They were both candidates for the 2010 special election for CD1 and split the Democratic vote allowing Charles Djou to win for the GOP. Special elections in Hawaii are really dumb. There are no primaries and all candidates regardless of party run on the same ballot in a FPTP election.

Is there any significant Hawaii Independence Movement/Party/faction, and/or a Hawaii-was-never-properly-incorporated-into-the-USA movement? (Emphasis on the word "significant")

(Emphasis on the word "significant") No, not really and Hawaii's status is not particularly controversial to anyone other than Native Hawaiians who only make up around 10% of the population. Furthermore those Native Hawaiians unhappy with their status tend to focus on creating a sovereign "Hawaiian nation", similar to that of many Native American tribes on the US mainland, rather than on succession from the US.

Interesting outcome in the Minnesota Governor’s race on the Republican side, former two term Governor and Presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty has been defeated by businessman Jeff Johnson who will face Tim Walz who’s won the Democratic nod. Definitely improves the Dems chances of retaining the Governorship.

Will be interesting how November plays out in the State.

Tim Pawlenty made a particularly pathetic presidential bid in 2012, as many may recall.

Walz was the best the Democrats could have got for Governor, their votes in the 1st and 8th Congressional Districts we’re comfortably ahead of their Republican counterparts. They’ll hold what they’ve got, and possibly gain Lewis’ 2nd CD.
