Somebody somewhere will be able to tell me where "Staina" comes from. There's a "Stanah" in the ward (which is otherwise Thornton, off of Thornton-Cleveleys) so that might have something to do with it.

Whether there is any connection with the Staina in Thornton Cleveleys is another matter . It might be staina in proto-Germanic, but the Old English word is stan. The same word in normalised Old Norse is stein, and I think it's fairly commonly written stain in runic inscriptions, though I'm not sure whether that reflects an original pronunciation or just the futhark's idiosyncratic representation of vowels. As for the terminal -a,that could either be from ey, island or more likely á, river. Could the stream north of Stanah originally have been called something that might now translate as Rocky River? All that said, it could just be from stan, mediated through a millenia of local accents.

Cheers folks. Maybe I should also dust off my place name dictionary, it's I the besom somewhere.
This byelection might be out interest if, as has happened before in Wyre, there's a Ukip candidate. Safe-ish Tory ward with the opinion polls as they are, fairly Labour freshly area surrounding, Ukip in the mix....

Nicholas Watson has now resigned from Scottish Borders Council At last! Only took 5 months. Apparently the Conservatives have chosen Rachel Hamilton as their candidate already. The by-election will have to be held by mid-May at the latest, depending on when the resignation takes effect.
