Labour did have a plan to really help Blackpool - the megacasino. It got squashed due to fairly misplaced moral objections. (BTW I grew up in Scarborough so I do know about seaside resorts) I thought Manchester won the right to host it? The site was right next to the current Etihad Stadium. It was a Blair policy that was quashed quickly by Gordon Brown. Quite the theme. Flashman succeeded by the offspring of a religious minister.

The spirals for the Football Stadium can be seen to the left of the picture just next to the 'B in the Bang' public sculpture (now melted down):

Its not a general panacea - but if the Blackpool one was unique and could act as a hub then it could have helped there, specifically. As we do have strong regulation, it could have worked, and I haven't seen anything taking its place on my last visit... Leaving aside moral considerations, do large capital projects often lead to people being priced out of communities, do they always benefit the people at the bottom of the heap ? Housing costs are a function of how desirable the area is to live in. If you make a place nicer it is inevitable that housing costs will rise, because obviously more people will want to live there. That's an issue that is worth thinking about. Even when the company is based in London it's worth bearing in mind that it means all profits and big earners based in head-office get sent to the capital to trickle down into that economy rather than the local economy. This is the leeching effect of having a mega-city like London in the country... But anyway, what about predictions for today's elections???

Improving an areas is great, however when gentrification takes place, what do we see rents rise, people who have lived in an areas all their lives forced out, speculators profit. Tonights byelections Aylesbury Vale, Lib Dem hold Bath & NE Somerset, close between Lib Dem and Green Calderdale, Cons too far ahead so Cons hold Tendering, Cons gain from UKIP

All 11 entrants in the prediction thread agree the overall results on all 4 contests, so 1 Tory hold and 1~ gain, I LibDem hold and 1 gain, 2 ukip losses -so that must be right, don't you think?

I spent the afternoon in sunny Elmhurst ward in Aylesbury yesterday. Lib Dems hopeful, main challenge does seem to be from UKIP rather than the Tories. Little evidence of the election, if I hadn't been there for political reasons I wouldn't have guessed there was an election on. The Lib Dem team seemed very well organised. Of course if it's a Lib Dem win I'll claim the credit, if not then I clearly wasn't there for long enough!
