Lower Mosley Street was the location of Manchester Coach Station for many years (ah, happy memories). On some blinds it was shown as 'Manchester LMS'. Some people (pre-1948) thought this meant it would take them to a railway station ... [Bonus point for introducing both bus and rail matters?] Well Lower Mosley Street Bus Station wasn't that far from Manchester Central Station. I seem to recall using both LMS and Chorton Road Bus Stations when travelling to/from Cheadle Hulme. [Trying to steer the discussion towards Stockport Pubs] Baker's Vaults.

I do have a weird feeling about this TBH
I can maybe see Galloway getting 20%+ due to soaking up Brexiteers in Gorton proper and some Muslims while Labour haemorrhages remainer votes to the LD.

Genuinely can't see GG getting anything like that much. But I have been wrong before.

More seriously I had a dream last night that I had gone to Gorton and taken my bicycle with me (as one does - nothing more useful than a bicycle at a byelection). Anyway, cycling to the committee room I realised I didn't have a padlock to secure said bike. So I stopped at a hardware shop, run by the Nantwich councillor who was Timpson's Agent at the 2008 C&N byelection (this is not as odd as it may seem since he owns a timber merchants which sells lots of hardware type stuff). He sent me to distant aisles which turned out not to contain padlocks and generally delayed and distracted me. So, my prediction for Gorton is now: Conservative GAIN Achieved by underhand means.

Still no sign of other candidates here.

Still no sign of other candidates here. The Greens were spotted doing a litter pick yesterday.

Am I right in thinking that Labour have now missed the boat if they wanted to hold this on 4th May?

It's just struck me that the section highlighted - which in my case was a dream - reads like the sort of thing Johnloony would record factually. Except he would also be able to tell us how many miles he had cycled in each of the last eight byelections he had visited.

Why was Manchester Central built by the Cheshire Lines Committee? I'd just assumed it was LNER or Midland. Neil, presume you mean the GNR, rather than the LNER which didn't come into existence until 1921. The LNWR was blocking the Midland from getting into Manchester, so it went in with the GNR and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway in the CLC. Manchester Central was one of the results. Younger readers will know Manchester Central as the GMEX of course. I thought Manchester Central was built in the 1920s! Obviously I've misremembered.
