As far as I'm concerned that result only goes to prove that half of Labour's supporters fall into what I call the basket of deplorables - swivel-eyed loons and fruitcakes, not to mention racists and fascists. I think it is a reasonable proposition that a large number of those who voted for UKIP in the last couple of elections won't have bothered this time.

That is a remarkably good result for Labour. I assume it reflects the quality and/or the well-knownness of the candidate. I don't think any in the Red Team would advance the idea that there has been a very recent 21% swing from Conservatives to labour?!! Congratulations to Labour. That is a magnificent one-off (we all hope) result. Well done. From Andrew Teale: "With Hampshire county council presently consulting on whether to close Fort Hill secondary school the major issue of the campaign is an obvious one, to the extent that the defending Tory candidate has signed a petition against the school closure which was started by the Labour candidate." Enough said!

There was a lot of hard work put in by the Labour cllrs there. Immediately after HFRA yesterday, our County Cllr was rushing back to Basingstoke to do her bit in getting Labour voters to the polls.

I'm firming up that Labour will be up one on Hampshire CC in May, taking the seat that this ward is in from the Tories. I think they'll hold the rest that they've got (though Bridgemary in Gosport looks a little hairy) and get nowhere near anywhere else.

Quite a remarkable result which at first site kooks out of kilter with other recent ones (certainly caused mayhem on the prediction thread). But on reflection the common factor is a continuing awful run for the Tories, itself out of kilter with the opinion polls. The voters are turning out in droves for whoever was best placed to beat down the governing party and went for what was clearly locally a well organised campaign by Labour

The Conservatives are hoping for a good night in Copeland and Stoke - but their council by-elections tonight are dire (as they have been, for months).
